This works out nicely actually because I've been wanting to talk about Ye Zun for a while now and hadn't got around to it. I was going to do a Twitter thread but I'll talk about him here instead. What I have to say covers all of Guardian right through to the finale so I'm going to put it behind a cut in case there is anyone avoiding spoilers.
I've been mulling over this for a while and trying to put my finger on what it is about Ye Zun that makes me invested in fics that deal with redeeming him. In my mind I keep comparing him to Loki from the MCU.
When Loki killed Phil Coulson I was out. I wasn't interested in reading fics about him, I wasn't interested in his redemption. Even after they brought Phil back and gave him his own show I was still mad at Loki. The closest I got to caring about him was in Thor: Ragnarok where he was more of a comic relief character.
So, looking at Ye Zun it's interesting that I do genuinely care about him and I'm still trying to figure out why. Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan may have chosen to end their own lives at the very end but it was Ye Zun who put them in that situation. It was Ye Zun who fired the blast that would have killed Zhao Yunlan if Shen Wei hadn't stepped in front of him, it was Ye Zun who stabbed Shen Wei with the icicle that eventually killed him. I should hate him, and yet.
It's not just because Ye Zun is played by Zhu Yilong who I love. Tom Hiddleston is great and I will watch pretty much anything that he's in.
I just think of that little boy who watched his twin brother get thrown off a cliff, who then got raised by the rebels who (to his knowledge) murdered his brother. He was kept captive, abused, and it's no wonder he ended up the way he was.
So I wouldn't say I forgive him for Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei's death, but I understand that everything that happened to him broke something in him. And if there's fics out there that fix Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan's deaths then why shouldn't we also work on fixing all the terrible things that happened to Ye Zun.
I have no idea if this qualifies as something nice but I wanted to talk about it so...
