I get tomorrow off! I'm looking forward to that, especially since I finally feel pretty human again, no more lingering illness.

1.
The horizon has glimmers of color as I drive to work, these days. It's very nice! It also means I'm cynically like "it's going to be sunrise when I'm driving to work and then daylight saving is gonna happen and it'll be dark again", because that's just how it goes.

2.
Periodically I remember that doing things gives you more energy for doing things, inclusive of how hanging out with people means you have more energy for hanging out with people? Truly the most annoying thing, knowing that sometimes forcing yourself to do the thing will result in feeling better! But also sometimes you need to not because of being out of energy/spoons. Balancing this! The worst!

3.
Star Trek: Discovery s3 continues to be overall good!
(When did I last talk about this. Ep4, apparently! So!)
s3e5 "Die Trying": I adored the set design for the seed ship. This was a good example of moving the plot along while setting up a farewell episode for a crew member who wouldn't be continuing on!
s3s6 "Scavengers": I want the miniseries/full arc of this episode. I am extremely here for the Michael/Phillipa/Book trio! I also think that having more time to dig into the prioritization of "solve the Burn" vs "obey Starfleet structure" vs "save people" would have been excellent.
s3e7 "Unification III": I will indeed cry upon seeing old footage of Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Uh. idk, the Qowat Milat are always cool? This episode progressed arcplot, mostly?
s3e8 "Sanctuary": god I really want more specifics about what Book's empathy powers are. Fun antics around following the letter of the law with Starfleet protocol, and makes it clear that yeah the Emerald Chain is gonna be the arcvillain. Also, Adira comes out to Stamets as nonbinary! in a scene that's very "okay yeah this is meant to be #relatable to teens", which isn't a bad thing but also I fundamentally am like "but it's Star Trek, why would a nonbinary person be worried about if they'd be accepted in Star Trek?"
s3s9-10 "Terra Firma", parts 1 and 2: A two-episode farewell to Mirror Phillipa Georgiou. I loved this as a character study for her! However! It makes the season's pacing really weird, since there are only three episodes left in the season and these two episodes were basically not about the arcplot at all. Phenomenal for the relationship between Michael and Phillipa, though, holy shit.

Truly a lot of my feelings about DSC s3 are that it doesn't seem to quite know if it's an episodic show or an arcplot show, and that leaves me resenting both the cutaways from episodic plots to arcplot scenes and the cutaways from arcplot for episodic plots. xD I still enjoy it because of the character dynamics, and I'm glad Tilly is starting to get what she's owed, but it's kind of messy plotting. Looking forward to the finale anyway, and I also expect that s4 will have an easier time with figuring itself out since it won't be as busy trying to establish the new time/setting as well.

4.
I also watched the first 9 episodes of Duet of Shadows a republican-era cdrama with ~19min episodes about very butch4butch investigator protags. Definitely having a good time! The first case/arc is basically "a trans man opera singer got outed and died", for reasons that turn out to not be a gender-related hate crime (his gender is very respected by those who know him! there's a scene in which someone who knew him hands one of the protags a binder and is like "pls use this instead of bandages"!). I think this is fun. Not everyone will. xD Curious what the next case/arc will be, and shall see how long it takes for me to finish it!

5.
Watching Yanxi Palace slowly continues! We're seven episodes in now, and Yingluo has attracted the Empress's attention (positive). The brief cut back to the eunuch tasked with figuring out who the quick-witted maid (Yingluo) is for the Emperor in the midst of that was very funny. But mostly these episodes have been about how clever and ruthless Yingluo is, and how those are necessary traits in the inner courtyards of the imperial palace.

6.
Six Sentence Sunday is always a fun meme. This is more than six sentences, but it is Sunday!
“Ms. Warram,” Ames said icily, his patience worn thin, “you have not even given me details about your offer. Your letter said nothing about compensation, support, or even a timeline for prototyping. It merely told me what you wanted from me, and nothing about this conversation leads me to believe I will enjoy the environment of your trading company. Treat me with the respect the title of Chief Engineer implies and I might consider visiting your workshop to make an informed decision. Otherwise, I do not see any reason to continue this conversation."

Emeline sat up straight, hands folded in front of her, that ring catching the light. He still couldn’t quite make out the design on it. “Amaranth dev Citronel,” she said, “I will show you the workshop. You will come with me?”

Ames opened his mouth to say “No”, but the light kept gleaming from Emeline’s eyes and ring, and he couldn’t concentrate through them. His tongue felt thick and heavy, as did the rest of his body.

It occurred to Ames, as the light stole over him, that he had been so busy worrying about the mundane side of predatory business contracts that he hadn’t even thought about a mage dead-set on taking him.

His lips said Yes, and Ames’ last conscious thought was that, if nothing else, Rhei would know something was wrong as soon as they arrived back in Jogan’s Rest.

Movie update: turns out we are getting Z1L's new movie next week, which is awesome, but I'm not at all sure we're actually going to make it, given its showtimes and the fact that we aren't entertaining the notion of evening screenings. Alas. (That said, while I would very much like to see it, it doesn't actually look at all like a movie I would see if it weren't for Z1L, so I'm a bit sad, but not crushed.)

Reading: A few more volumes each of The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service and Hikaru no Go (I'm six volumes in on both), and I've started reading Stephanie Burgis' Wooing the Witch Queen.

Most of my reading time this week went to Epic Tomatoes: How to Select and Grow the Best Varieties of All Time (Craig Lehoullier), which I liked so much after reading the bought-on-sale ebook that I've ordered a hard copy. My intermittent low-key obsession with (the idea of) growing tomatoes continues to be mostly just weird, but as far as I can tell this book is a treasure. All other growing-tomatoes books can sit down.

Watching: As of this afternoon, we're caught up on The Pitt and still an ep. or two behind on Frieren.

We have two episodes of Midnight Mass to go, and may finish that tonight. It is pulling absolutely zero punches and is very upsetting (although no animal harm/death that I can think of since I mentioned the amount in the first couple of episodes?) and very well done. Wow. It is a LOT.

Working: Some potential (probable) impending stress about Dayjob is not doing wonders for my focus or mental health in general. (Nothing to do with Manager or coworders.) Good thoughts very welcome.

Tomorrow is a stat holiday, and then we have a week until the seasonal crunch begins. Whee! I have almost three weeks before my next freelance deadline, but it would sure be nice to get a draft on this rewrite before the crunch. I think I'm about a quarter of the way there.

This fanbinding has been done for a while but I didn’t get around to posting it. helenish’s fic is one of my favourite Inception fics ever and I’ve reread it frequently.

IDK if I ever left a comment back in the day - I wasn’t very good about commenting then and I’m not scrolling through over 500 comments to check. 😅 But anyway, this fic is amazing, I love it, and therefore I wanted to make a book out of it!

Because of the setting, I chose a lot of Nordic/Viking imagery as far as I could find some. It’s really annoying to search for these things nowadays and try to filter out all the AI slop, since the usual exclusion markers don’t really work anymore on Google.

I'm not even from or in the US, and don't usually post about the politics there, but I thought I should share this post by my flister [personal profile] mecurtin:

"If it seems as though Trump plans to steal the midterm elections, you’re right. If it seems as though there’s no way to stop him, you’re wrong. But if you think the institutions we already have are up to the job of stopping him, you’re also wrong.

I’ve been attending Indivisible’s weekly “What’s the Plan?” meetings with co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin for almost a year now. Indivisible’s strategy for the whole year is built around the midterm elections."

It's necessary to plan ahead to have the necessary momentum by the end of the year. Here's the full post:

FTH Fanbinding: "Tender" by Deastar

This was a bit of an unofficial fanbinding for [community profile] fandomtrumpshate as Deastar got outbid in the auction but I wanted to bind a CQL fic. XD So we agreed she’d donate for FTH and I’ll be doing the two other fics that make a loosely connected series with “Concord” - “Tender” and “Gifted” (which is still a WIP).

As it’s part of a series, I didn’t have to ponder much about the general design - it should fit the “Concord” fanbinding, but use different colours, since this fic is set in the Burial Mounds.

So black and red it was! I’ve got this really great bookcloth that is a mix of red and black threads which worked beautifully for this bind. The white ribbon was a must as Lan Wangji’s ribbon plays an important part in this fic.

This book was for the FTH raffle winner Wysie, who chose one of her favourite BTS fics by redpangur to be made into a book. It took me quite a while to finish this book for several reasons (some in my control, some not), but it finally was finished at the end of November, though I only could send it in January, after all.

I've got no idea about BTS and its fanfic or pairings, so I relied on Wysie's comments on favourite scenes and on the AO3 comments, who zeroed in on a scene with a pomegranate in the first chapter, which seemed to be an important scene. As a pomegranate is a great image to use as a theme in the book, I decided to run with it. :D

The Orchid Show never disappoints. It's always a breath of air and a flash of bright light to remind you to hold on until springtime finally arrives. I went today with a friend, and while it was the reason we tromped up there, it was also excuse for the tromping at the same time - mostly to see each other. Spending time with another adult in a social setting is a welcome feeling.

Getting there wasn't hard, just time consuming. Walking around was made easier by sticking to paths that were already plowed, so while I missed going into the forest, we saw a lot of it just by looking over and taking in what we could from the outside. As for the exhibit, this year it was New York City themed, done by a regional artist with a charming sense of humor - in addition to the big installations, which were themselves things like a pizza parlor, a fire escape, a brownstone covered in flowers, there were smaller constructions scattered throughout, like a steam vent that was accompanied by a bit of how-to on orchid care.

There were a fair number of small birds, a decent murder of crows, and no small number of all-black stealth mode squirrels. I kept having to point out the squirrels and birds to people, who were perpetually delighted to see them - so I can't be that upset they didn't notice, since they got to see them just the same.

A London statue walk

Yesterday afternoon, we went on a walk to see some of the many statues in the City of London. The theme of the walk was 'Diverse London - City Public Art by Refugees and Immigrants' and focused on the stories behind the art produced by first-generation refugees and immigrants to the UK.  London has always been a home to immigrant communities, and whole areas of the city were built by those finding their homes here, so it's not surprising that we also have wonderful artists who have left their mark.

The day was drizzly and wet, but I took photos of the examples we saw, along with some of the other sculptures we passed, which form the Sculpture in the City trail. Under the cut for the photos and some history of the City of London area.

I really enjoy walking around when there's a theme to the walk, and it was fascinating to see so many sculptures in the City of London by people who have moved here for whatever reason. It was a shame about the weather, but I'm glad we went.

My second Festivid was the same kind of immensely fun experience as the first one! Not only did I really enjoy my assignment, but I watched (and loved!) some new movies, and ended up creating a whole four treats for fellow Festividders. That kind of creativity is pure dopamine!

My vids this year span the spectrum of F/F love and grief, action ladies, Zhu Yilong in blue hair (+ aliens??), intergenerational bonding over BL manga and fanworks, and one of my favorite shows of the past couple of years: the utterly engrossing Korean cooking competition Culinary Class Wars.

The shortest vid I made is 1:30, and the longest is 4:27 (my longest vid ever!). I used sources from China, Japan and South Korea, and music by artists from Denmark, Iceland, Japan and South Korea. (And in the process I learned how to upload two sets of subtitles to YouTube - the lyrics both translated into English, and in the original language.)

A quick list of the fandoms & ratings:

유령 | Phantom (2023) - 2x F/F
负负得正 | Land of Broken Hearts (2024) - M/F
メタモルフォーゼの縁側 | BL Metamorphosis (2021) - Gen
흑백요리사: 요리 계급 전쟁 | Culinary Class Wars (TV) - Gen

The current round at [community profile] retro_icontest is the Icon Crossing round from [community profile] somein30. I had been working on sets for 2023 and 2024 already, but never finished them. I'm using this round to post those icons I made then, along with the new ones. I also randomized new pairs for 2025 and made new crossover icons for those. As suspected, this was so much fun, and I made a lot more icons than expected. In fact, I don't think I've ever made this many icons for a contest in one month before. Some of them are hilarious crack! :D Luckily, retro_icontest has no upper limit, so here you go:

RL is meh. My hip is much better, but the rest is ugh. My elbow was a bit better and then I overdid it by writing two more treats for Candy Hearts. I feel very accomplished now of course, but at what cost. *sigh* And I am now officially diagnosed with hypertension. And I have new meds, but I think my intestines don’t like them, so I have to make another appointment with my cardiologist. *sigh again*

And the weather is ugh, too – it’s dark, rainy and gloomy. All this pretty white snow that was here just a few days ago now took form of dirty, brown slush. One good thing is that last week we discovered a great new sushi place. Everything was very yummy, and we plan to eat there the next week, too.

Because of all of the reasons above, the things I did watch lately were mostly cute and fluffy, because I’m so not in the mood for anything angsty or depressing. And those cute things were:

Cat For Cash - Thai BL drama with pretty boys and talking cats, what’s not to like? 😊

My Romance Scammer - another Thai BL drama about two scammers (one who is good at what he does, and one who is really not) who fall for their marks – two cousins from a very rich family. 2 episodes aired for now and I really liked them. Junior is fantastic, and this is the first drama of the new ship OhmPoon, and I enjoy them so much here.

I Wanna Be Sup'tar - Thai GL drama about the romance between a famous and rich, but very unhappy girl and a poor girl with dreams about a big career in the entertainment industry. The 1st episode aired last week and I liked it. It’s cheesy and fun and I really like the main ship Lilly and Belle (who were the secondary ship in Harmony Secret).

Read, White & Royal Blue - I finally watched this movie yesterday, and I enjoyed it so much. It was cute, sexy, funny and touching. Alex and Henry are very adorable and hot together, and I love them to pieces. I’m so glad there will be a sequel. And I might try reading the book again, because I did try reading it a few years ago, and managed maybe 20 or 30 pages, because I found it rather bad. But that might be because I was reading a Polish translation. Will try the original this time.

Not so cute was the finale of Burnout Syndrome. It was a good drama, but I was rather disappointed with the ending. Even though I did expect an ending exactly like that. Since it is a Thai BL drama with a very popular fixed ship.

Spoilers here (and it's all complaining).Because really, they want me to, what? Cheer for Koh and Jira to be happy together? Feel sorry for Koh? I don’t feel sorry for a tech bro obsessed with AI, who still can’t understand why his lover, whom he professes to love so much, was angry at him about what he did. Koh still seems to think that this was just such a small thing and that Jira was overreacting. And he still blames everyone else for him being miserable. It’s never something he did, it’s always someone else’s fault.

And that ending felt so empty and boring to me. And I read a few opinions and some people seem to think this was not a happy ending and that viewers should wonder if Koh and Jira will stay together in the future. But to me, I think the drama does actually mean for us to believe they have a chance at a long-term relationship. It was filmed like a straightforward romance with appropriate music, and all that.

And earlier there was this song playing at one time over Jira’s image – “I will be his angel, I will be his savior”. And Pheem told Jira that Koh sold his AI interests like it’s supposed to be a good thing, and something that redeems Koh.

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that Koh is a monster and Jira is a blameless angel. Jira is toxic, too. And I even can believe that Koh in his own way loves Jira. But for Jira – ehhh... All I can see is sexual lust and desire to keep Koh as his Muse. Also they are both obsessed with money. After all one of Jira's first lines in the first episode is: "I'll do anything that pays". So who knows maybe they will live happily ever after. It’s just that I personally didn’t really care about that.

Last but not least – finally the official trailer for Only Friends Dream On is here. And it looks good.

Mix as a seductive manipulator, Earth looking gorgeous in glasses, my beloveds AouBoom being toxic and messy and hot as hell (that scene in the pool, wow... *fans self*), and Boston coming back to stir the pot even more. I already love it. 17th of February can’t come soon enough.

Different places to call home.

Earlier this week, I learned there's a squirrel nesting on the roof of a nearby empty house. A squirrel on a sidewalk less than a block from a park isn't unusual; a squirrel running away from the park is worth noticing. It ran along the concrete until it got to a tree, and about halfway up the trunk I saw it had some nesting materials in its mouth. Sticks, dried grass, nothing that could be mistaken for food. It went all the way up the trunk, well past where there'd be room to nest inside the tree, and jumped into the thin, empty branches, running along and over and finally making one last jump from the tree onto a row house that's been on the market for more than a few months at this point. Long enough a squirrel would feel safe nesting somewhere on the roof.

Yesterday, I got to feed a few urban pigeons after a couple of grizzled old-school construction workers were generous with the birdseed they'd brought with them that morning; none of the pigeons flew onto my hands, but a particularity bold one kept grabbing at my fingers, possibly to pull my hand closer so it'd be first in the pecking order.

Today, I saw a raven; it was close enough to see every tail feather, and make out the distinctive spade shape. Also to see how utterly gigantic they are compared to a lot of other birds. It was carrying some kind of food item in its beak, but I couldn't make out what it was, just that it'd been opportunistic and scavenged it from a garbage bin.

You've got to keep your eyes open for these things.

Me, after last post: I'll make a post with my vids when I have a little more time! :)
My house: *floods*
Me: :(

...okay it wasn't quite that dramatic. Only almost. Including waking to insistent beeping at 3:30am to find no lights working, the fridge (which was the insistently beeping thing) blinking a warning that it was losing electricity, and a plant light flickering like a haunted thing.

Now, we have had to check the fuses before, but not in the middle of a freezing night with a foot of snow outside. (The electrical main is on the outside of the house.) So that was an experience! But we did find a main fuse had flipped off, so flipped it back on.

And then, just as I was settling in for my half day at work (I am also on sick leave 50% because of a very bad... seven months) I got a text from my husband with pictures of our basement flooded with sewer water, and our heating pump freaking out.

Oh, and it was his birthday.

Hahah. Ha.

We've been homeowners for three years, and this was the biggest "fuck fuck what do we do agh fuck" moment so far! Fortunately our home insurance company knew who to call to start un-flooding the basement, and it is literally just a little storage room with its own door, not a furnished basement or even connected to the upstairs in any way. (We had some bad smell in the bathroom above it, but nothing that spread further after I covered the drain and put a plate of vinegar out.) So we didn't lose anything important!

We did start freaking out a bit about the heating pump, for obvious reasons of a heating system being something you don't want breaking in the middle of winter, but our electrician literally sold us the house, and he was able to come around within a few hours of getting my call.

So by 2pm, our basement was scrubbed clean and was being dried by an industrial fan, and all of the secret fuses we had not remembered existed had been replaced/switched back on. Heat worked! Electricity worked! Just the way we and the kitties like it.

The root cause for all of this was a randomly blocked sewer pipe that we had to pay to have unclogged by a vacuum truck, but discovering an emergency during office hours is great for getting a good rate on that sort of thing!

Now to research whether or not it's worth getting some kind of check valve or something installed in that particular basement floor drain.

...and at some point I will also have the time and energy to post the vids I made. But for now, that's what's happening over here! Hope everyone else is having a much less exciting week.
