Glee. I tried to watch it, I really did. But after four episodes the cheesiness and soap-opera storylines were just too much.

Apparently this means I have no soul

Questions

hils: (Team Free Will)
This morning I have been discussing SPN with [livejournal.com profile] flickums as we do on a fairly regular basis.

First of all you know when Sam has a salad shake in Sam, Interrupted (I don't think that's a spoiler). Do those actually exist or is it something they made up for the show?

Then I was explaining the difference between being Jossed and being Kripked and we started talking about things we were sure were going to happen on the show but never came into being.

Flick was convinced it was going to turn out John was a demon

I was convinced that Castiel was lying about being an angel and was actually a demon

Flick thought Jo was going to turn out to be Sam and Dean's half-sister

So we thought we'd get you guys involved. Are there any things you felt sure were going to happen on the show but never came into being? Or plot-twists you were expecting that never happened?
hils: (Reccer)
It's 2:40am and I really should be asleep but I need to get this down while it's fresh in my mind.

I want to talk briefly about my weekly rec list and how it came into being.

It started last year when [livejournal.com profile] woman_of_, [livejournal.com profile] kittypoker1 and I decided to band together and do weekly recs for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. Prior to that I'd been tossing out the odd rec here and there when something caught my eye but it was this that got me into reccing on a regular basis.

Every Monday I would link to my favourite fics posted for the challenge over the past seven days with a few details about why I was reccing it. When the challenge was over it just kind of stuck and branched out to include fics from any fandom/pairing and not just J2

I just want to say that I am far from an expert when it comes to fannish things. I haven't been in the SPN fandom for that long compared to a lot of people so I'm not what you would call well versed in characterisation and tropes that have been done to death. In fact I'm quite specific in my tastes and often I've found that fics that the majority of the fandom loves just doesn't do it for me. I just know what I like and that's what I rec.

I also want to add that there are LOADS of fics out there that I enjoy but don't rec. Unfortunately if I recced every fic I enjoyed my rec list would be pages long every week. The ones I rec are just the ones that I had a particularly strong emotional reaction to. They might not even necessarily be the most brilliantly well written, but if I get sucked into the story enough that is makes me laugh, cry or think then I'll rec it.

So I don't mean any offence if I don't include something you've written and it certainly doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.

So there we go.

I'm going to bed now

100 things to love about the SPN fandom by [livejournal.com profile] missyjack

It may have made me tear up a little

*sniff*

You know it's funny that I sometimes forget I am relatively new to the SPN fandom. I mean I've been watching the show since pretty much the beginning and I've never stopped (although there were times I wanted to) but I wasn't really in the fandom. I've always had a background awareness of it through my friends, though, while I was off playing in other fandoms. So pretty much everything on that list I remember even if I didn't pay it that much attention when it happened.

Really I've only properly been in the fandom for just over a year. It's mostly down to [livejournal.com profile] goth_clark and [livejournal.com profile] vichan so I should probably bake them some cookies or something. But it feels like so much longer because of this background awareness of the whole thing.

And now we're at 100 episodes. Wow.

I love that list though. Happy memories, even if I wasn't really involved at the time. It just makes me acknowledge that for all the wank and drama this fandom is an awesome place to be. I've met some fantastic people through SPN, and some of my friends from other fandoms have come to SPN with me. Others got here before I did and were waiting for me join them.

And, of course, let's not forget the show introduced me to Misha, and Traci, and Jim, and Chad. Twitter is an awesome place to hang out at thanks to them.

Oh, yeah, and those two J guys ;)

BNFdom

Someone left this link in a comment to my BNF post and I found it pretty interesting so I thought I'd share

Nobody Ever Admits They're A BNF
hils: (Dean/Cas)
There seems to be a lot of meta about Dean and Castiel's relationship on my flist today, which is cool, I like reading what people think about things.

However, I have something else I want to discuss for reasons which will become apparent later.

BNFs (that's Big Name Fans if you were wondering). What do people think about them? I've always been really curious about the whole BNF thing, and how they come into being. Personally speaking I find it more than a little strange that some fans are acredited more worth than others in a fandom. I don't really blame the people in question and I don't think I've ever really had a bad experience with a BNF before but I do find the whole thing curious.

Like a BNF will do a post that says something like 'I had this really yummy chicken soup for lunch' and get 50 replies from people talking about their own experiences with chicken soup. Is it just because people are desperate to be part of a group and replying to a BNF post gives them some sort of status? I don't know.

What makes a BNF in your opinion? Is it because they write particularly good fic, or really intelligent and thought provoking meta? Is it just whoever happens to be the one to launch a new ship in a fandom?

I'd love to know what you think, and what your experiences with BNFs are. Ever met a BNF where the 'fame' got to their heads? Or have they all been pretty down to earth and nice in your experience?

Answers on a postcard (or in the comments)
hils: (Dean thinking by mata090680)
Thanks to everyone who filled in my SPN poll. The results were quite interesting. Feel free to comment with your own...uh...comments

Season 1 Dean and Season 2 Dean were pretty much evenly tied, with only one vote pushing Season 2 Dean into the lead. Season 3 Dean was the least popular.

Personally speaking I voted for Season 1 Dean for the simple reason that he was a lot more fun back then. I certainly agree the character has a lot more depth now but the reason I fell in love with the show in the first place was Dean's snark.

I'm assuming Season 3 Dean was the least popular because he doesn't do a great deal in that season. It's more about Sam trying to find ways to get Dean out of his deal while Dean is in denial about the whole thing

Season 2 Sam was a clear winner for the most popular. He's the one I voted for. I think by season 2 Sam has really come into his own and we see him grow up a lot and stop whining so much. LOL.

Season 5 Sam was the least popular, again I suspect because he hasn't done a great deal so far.

Season 4 Castiel was a clear winner. Personally speaking I'm still not 100% on board with what they're doing with Cas this year. I hate seeing him reduced to comic relief, and even his serious storylines seem to be massively underplayed.

Season 2 was voted the favourite with most people with Season 4 coming a close second. I voted for Season 2 as it's got loads of really great episodes and I liked the overall storyline about Sam being the chosen one and the boys having to deal with Azazel's plan for him, as well as coping with their dad's death.

Season 3 was the overwhelming least popular and I suspect this was due to the hurried nature of them having to tie everything up thanks to the writer's strike.

Remember ages ago I did a post asking why SPN fans were more crazy than most? Then [livejournal.com profile] woman_of_ did a similar post yesterday. Nobody seems to have the answer

Until now! I've just been discussing it with [livejournal.com profile] lady_carfax when it came to me

SPN is just one huge psychological experiment involving hypnosis and subliminal messages.

Consider the evidence:

1. 90% of the fandom is nuts, and of those people a good 40% are not the fun kind of crazy

2. There isn't a single person I've shown this to who hasn't loved it. Really, I have never had a 100% successful conversion rate with any other show

3. When I was going to quit watching the show I started having vivid recurring dreams that Jared Padalecki was my boyfriend. I mean we're talking consecutive nights here. I didn't even like Sam at this point, I was a Dean girl all the way.

4. Misha Collins

I don't know why I'm feeling all navel-gazy at the moment but I am. Thanks to everyone who commented on my LJ/Non-LJ discussion yesterday.

So, [livejournal.com profile] eliza_jane has written a really interesting post on advice to fangirls

It's really awesome but bits of it made me think so I'm going to go through some of the points and add my own comments

Enjoy the power and freedom of your fannish persona. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and freedom of your fannish persona until real life causes you to take a fandom hiatus. But trust me, in the middle of RL bullshit, you'll look back at your post-episode reactions and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much fun you really had. You are not as cynical as you imagine.
I don't know if I have a fannish persona. I suppose I'm a little more talkative on here than I am in RL but I think what you see is what you get with me. I hope so anyway. The sad thing is I have never really had to take a fandom hiatus and the mere idea of it saddens me more than it should. I think that possibly means I have an unhealthy balance between fandom and RL. Possibly something I need to address there.

Read a story every once in awhile that scares you.
Does this mean I should try Wincest? I'm willing to take recs at this point but I can't promise I'll read.

Don't waste your time hating BNFs. Sometimes you're part of the "in" crowd, sometimes you think they’re douchebags. The internet is huge and, in the end, they’re just fangirls like everybody else.
I find the whole BNF thing quite strange to be honest. Who decides whose opinions hold more worth than others? Are BNFs made because they write good fic or is it something else. I've never really born witness to a BNF coming into being. They've always just been there. To be honest, though, in all the fandoms I've been in the BNFs have been nice.

Get to know your friendslist. You never know when they'll fuck off to Star Trek. Be nice to your friends from previous fandoms. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to read your stories in the future.
Sometimes I feel that I maybe ignore people on here who aren't in my current fandom. It's a bad habit and one I am looking to break. Is there anything I can do my make my LJ more inclusive to you guys. Are there things you'd like to see that you wish I posted more of? Or would you prefer it if I just shut up about SPN. LOL.

Understand that lj friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in fandoms and favored pairings, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were a crazy Clexer.
I don't think I say often enough how appreciative I am of those of you who have been with me since the Buffy fandom days. I've been through several fandoms since then and you're still here. That means more to me than I could possibly say.
hils: (LJ by kagome_taisho)
You know, sometimes I forget that not everyone who is a fan of a show is involved in fandom. This girl keeps bugging me on Twitter and accusing me of cheating in the SPN sigil game. Really, I'm in 4th place and she's still accusing me of cheating. Her logic is that there was no way I could get 300 people to join my army so I must have hacked the game somehow.

I linked to my army here, Twitter and Facebook. That's about 900 people right there. And, of course, because we've got that fandom community spirit people have been asking their friends to help me out and it's just sort of spread.

When I tried to explain this I just got sarcasm.

Ah well.

It's also amusing me that my friends on Twitter have just found a load of old Marksha pics that I saw months ago on one of my LJ comms. Some of you know which comm I mean ;) Again I forget that not everyone is on LJ.

For all its awesome I think LJ is quite an insular place. I mean if I get a new interest I don't really look outside LJ for places to frequent and talk about it. I'm not on any forums or anything like that, which I used to be back before fandom migrated to LJ. I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not.

Do you guys hang out in fandom places outside of LJ? Should I be looking to broaden my horizons?

What?

I choose to believe that Misha and/or Jensen and Jared have been teaching Danneel that the best way to get fandom on your side is to talk about it. Seriously, after the clasp clasp tweet she is now talking about Clex

I've always admired her for putting up with Jensen's batshit crazy fans but now I think I kind of love her.

Plus she replied to one of my tweets with surreal poetry. LOL!

Semi-meta

hils: (Winchesters by me)
I was going to do a meta post about this but I don't think I've been in the fandom long enough really. So instead let me pose a question.

What is it about Supernatural that seems to drive people more crazy than most other fandoms?

Really, I don't get it. I've been watching the show for years now but I only really got into the fandom recently because it has such a bad reputation for being full of crazies. What is it about this show that drives people insane? It really does seem to be worse than any other fandom I've been in, especially when you consider it's got a pretty small amount of viewers compared to a lot of shows.

The sheer amount of wank is off the charts, and don't even get me started on the huge numbers of fangirls who seem to have no grasp of what is and isn't appropriate to say to actors both at cons and on Twitter.

I'd love to know what you think. May compile a meta post based on the answers.

Got caught up in reading VanCon reports and replying to comments in my fandom wank post last night and didn't get to bed until gone 4am this morning. Oops.

On the plus side I woke up to nice and amusing things this morning

A while back I asked on Twitter (not to Misha directly, because no) whether Misha was a vegetarian for my [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang. He strikes me as the sort of person who would be. So, [livejournal.com profile] sinnerforhire asked him for me! WHEE! It really does feel like I was there now *g*

If you were wondering

No, he is not a vegetarian; he was vegan and then veggie for 8 years, but now agrees that life w/o bacon is not worth living.

A man after my own heart. I was veggie for 5 years and couldn't even imagine it now. I don't know how people do the whole vegan thing. NO CHEESE!

Then on top of that I found the SPN tinhats were in full force this morning following the posting of this this. Really, I was laughing so hard at all the comments where the J2 shippers went mental, the Misha/Jensen shippers went gleeful, the Jared/Misha shippers chipped in and felt neglected and those of us who don't ship Misha with anyone just stood back and watched the carnage.

Really, aside from my little grumble yesterday, you cannot take fandom seriously. Things like this just make me laugh (and the only reason I was annoyed yesterday was because it was stuff being sent directly to the actors. Keep fandom with the fangirls, people)
