I actually think that is the best episode this show has done! Ever! I mean the stuff at the start was hilarious of course but then there was an actual serious plot that advanced what was going on
Cas is a fanboy! OMG! I about died when he started flicking through the book! And he was so awesome giving Dean hints on what to do. Seriously, I have so much love it hurts.
Right, now I am going to go and read fic. Best 'Dean reads fanfic about him and Cas' story will be recced shortly. There's bound to be...a few out there.
Edit: Actually, I was thinking. I've discussed with people before about the difference between Joss and Kripke. Joss has his own ideas. He knows what fans want and often gives it to them but with a twist, like the very dark and abusive Spuffy relationship in season 6
Kripke just wants to make the fans happy I think. Rightly or wrongly he gives us what we want. Fans like Cas, so we get more Cas in season 5. Not complaining.
If Joss was writing the show Cas would fall because of his attachment to Dean, and then die, happy that he discovered what love was even if it wasn't returned.
Kripke...well, I don't know what he's going to do but I don't think it will be anything that bleak.
But I was thinking about this and how it's going to end. I think Dean is going to die. Again. Not at the end of season 4 I mean when the series comes to an end. I think he will die and go to heaven because once the war is over what else is there for him to do? The man deserves some peace and I think it will be his reward for doing God's work. Naturally Cas will be there too, and probably his mother. I'm not really sure what happened to John after he got released from Hell.

This episode was sooo good because it was epic crack+suspense+character/plot advancement. More please,Kripke!

Date: 2009-04-05 12:58 am (UTC)I don't think it was the best ever episode, nor even best of the season - but then I'm not really part of the fandom, so I still prefer the last one, and one before.
That said, taking the fandom side of it out of the equation, this was a very important episode, it brought back Lillith, it showed that heaven still has guns held to one side - the archangels. I did wonder why the war was taking such a toll on the angels - I mean the Morning Star is an archangel, what would be the point of releasing him, if he were defeatable by an army of demons? Now we know, the powers of the archangels haven't been shown to us. If they come into play, the power that be (whether it's god, or if god isn't attentive which is kind of the feeling I'm getting, his right hand man), is really pissed.
Of course there's a logic trap here, the archangels imprisoned Lucifer a long time ago, what's to stop them doing it again? Do the demons truly believe the archangels won't come into play?
Maybe that's Dean's destiny - maybe he exerts a controlling influence over the archangels, as we saw tonight. He got an archangel to do his bidding, Dean - the foul mouthed, former athiest, achieved ownage over a true power of the universe.
The other side of this episode is that Sam was willing to sacrifice himself to end the war - it would have been futile. Lillith only promised to stop going after seals, that the war between her and the angels would be over - but I suspect she's lost control of the war. We know already that the demons are a divided race, and with the devil's gate opening back in season two, there are far more demons trying to excercise control over fate.
Another interesting thing is we saw Castiel's boss again, Zachariah, so obviously he knows Castiel has gone rogue, but is permitting it - maybe because the prophet is writing that Castiel isn't stopped? Anyway, he's allowing Castiel free reign, maybe even encouraging him subtley?* Either way, there's something going on with Zachariah, he certainly knows the ending to this tale. I don't think Chuck does yet, I think he saw the final battle, he saw the precipice to which in one moment fate is decided, it could go one way or the other, depending on Dean... and that it's something awful.
I think with Galactica retired, and sun bound... Supernatural is now my number one current show...
*side note, could that mean that Zachariah is the shipper dragon of Supernatural?

Date: 2009-04-05 01:01 am (UTC)I don't know what my favourite show is now that BSG has gone. Probably Lost. SPN is probably the one that makes me most happy though, which I still can't get my head around

Date: 2009-04-05 01:07 am (UTC)For me, SPN this season is ticking more boxes than any other show, with the exception of Being Erica, where I think the number of boxes ticked is similar - the thing is, Being Erica has had it's finale, and it was awesome, but we're left hanging high and dry until now time around - if there's a next time, not sure it's a show that other people enjoy that much.
