Something which has only just occurred to me. The creators of Merlin have openly said that the show was inspired by Smallville. Now, look at Merlin's preferred wardrobe: Red shirt and blue neckscarf or blue shirt and red neckscarf

They're not even trying here, are they. LOL! What next: Arthur goes bald?

Your next task - Shoop Colin's face onto a suitably heroic picture of Clark (like, for example, your icon right there)...

How about Merlin rips open his clothes only to remember that he hasn't got a superhero costume underneath?
I'd be happy with that :D

I started rewatching the series on DVD today, and all the Smallville similarities jumped out at me. Funny, but they really hadn't before! Colin Morgan even looks like a much shorter, skinnier Tom Welling. ;)

I think in my first episode review of Merlin I pointed out all the similarities. This was before the writers said they'd been inspired by Smallville

I swear to god, in 1x11, Arthur is wearing purple. I think I died. (And also really wanted to come up with some clever way to make crossover, but alas! I am not that smart. T_T )

But seriously, somewhere we need to make a post and just discuss all the ways Merlin = Smallville. <3

[fibre geek]Purple is traditionally a royal colour because it was one of the hardest and most expensive colours to dye. It makes sense that Arthur would wear it, and it's associations with luxury (and the roman emporers, who were the only ones allowed to wear purple togas) mean its perfect for Lex as well. [/fibre geek]

Plus, its a good colour for both Lex and Arthur anyway.

Hee. Yes, someone else pointed out the clothes thing to me and I thought it was fun. They've openly said SV inspired it though, huh? Fantastic, now whenever I'm in the mood for a British vs American argument I can say 'hey look at Merlin, it's sooo much better written than SV, we ROCK!' :p

... although... are you really keen for a cross-over right about now too? I was thinking have Clark in the UK pulling Excalibur from a stone would be pretty awesome! :D

The amount of slashiness between Merlin and Arthur and Clark and Lex (especially in earlier seasons).

The fact that both Merlin and Clark have secrets to keep from people around them.

Yup, that's basically it

There is a slight difference in that I didn't immeadiatly want to slap Gwen or Morgana (Hmm, I gues Gwen is the Lana-analogue) but yes, they are very very similar. The dragon is Jor-El I suppose?

Date: 2008-12-29 08:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hils.livejournal.com
Yes, the worst you can say about Lana is she's a bit boring. Nowhere near as annoying as Lana

Yes, I love the dragon as Jor-El

no seriously? i like smallville, really...but what kind of possible comparions could there be between smallville and merlin? the shows are nothing alike...alright...maybe the gay subtext between the two main leads...but seriously...if you want to look you can find that anywhere...

i am just baffled...lol...

but i guess if there are some who see smiliarties...why not write a crossover fic? now that would be interesting...

Hehe! If you read the comments to this post you'll see there are LOTS of similarities

Date: 2008-12-29 09:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] folkin-up-again.livejournal.com
I actually noticed the similarites as well, except I wasn't thinking so literally.

Merlin is exactly like Clark in that he has gifts, abilities, that he can't explain at first much like Clark can't in the beginning of Smallville. They both possess a hero complex and feel the need to save everyone and both have a very strong sense of justice. In addition, Merlin is battling to keep his magic a secret, just as Clark battles to keep his abilities secret.

I don't really see how Arthur wearing the colours red/bleu/yellow make him similar to Smallville, besides the obvious reason that those are Superman colours. I think Arthur just wears a lot of red because it's Camelot's colour.

But there is definitely a similarity between Merlin and Clark. (And much slash in common as well) =]

Something no one has mentioned so far (that I saw), and what I think they were actually talking about when they said Merlin was inspired by Smallville, is that it's a show about a well-known character with special powers set before he got famous.

Date: 2008-12-30 05:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] slythwolf.livejournal.com
I mean to say, both before the character is famous within his own canon and chronologically before the part of the story that we, the viewers, are familiar with.
