Ok, after spending one evening this weekend talking about SGA a lot I thought I'd give Season 1 a try

Do I need to have seen SG-1 to understand who everyone is and what's going on? And how long will it be before I want to start writing McShep?

Please feel free to write an essay-like comment explaining the whole Stargate history. I think I saw the first few episodes of SG-1 when it aired on Sky but that was many moons ago before I went to university

I'm assuming that when you say SG-1, you're referring to Stargate, not Stargate Atlantis? If so, then no, I don't think you need the Stargate background to pick up Atlantis. There are certainly peripheral references in some of the episodes, for example, the pilot for Atlantis, but I certainly didn't find them an issue. In fact, I was reading McShep and team fics for a while before watching any episodes.

Basically, the stargates use wormholes to connect to other stargates, either on worlds or in space. Up until they discovered another set of addresses, they were limited to travel in the Milky Way, now they're setting off for the Pegasus galaxy. Stargate had a set of bad guys, Atlantis has a different set and is isolated from Earth.

How long until you start writing McShep? I couldn't say. They're an interesting pair, and I've read a lot of friendship fics that could be interpreted as pre-slash and are quite satisfying without the sex. In fact, I'm finding it easier to write them that way, but then again, I do the same with CLex quite often. :-D

The major difference for me from CLex is their ages, their world views, the constraints they live under. There's a lot of danger they share in, so the camaraderie can be (and is) situational. I can see their closeness, but I'm looking for it. Others could find different pairing resonating more strongly for them.

I think part of the appeal for me is that both characters are so flawed emotionally. John is more socially adept, but uses it as a shield. Rodney is a mess, but a lot of his appeal for me is watching him grow beyond his limitations.

Of course, I'd love it if you checked out my SGA Fics, none of which are terribly lengthy. In addition, here are some of my favorites which illustrate the appeal of the pairing for me. There's a lot of great hurt/comfort in the genre as well as what I call competent Rodney (supergeek).

If you start on SGA, then i reckon in about two minutes you will be writing MacShep. The beauty of this relationship is that you can do pure friendship and then any mix of sex or not, according to your own likes, dislikes.

I have just read a wonderful, very long MacShep story and for the life of me cannot find the link. I will go and find it and send another post later.

Adopt one today!

I really loved to watch SGA. But ... may I be honest? I never ever had the urge to write McShep. I so dislike McKay that I can't hate anyone in Atlantis enough to consider to pair him up with McKay.

But ... how about the nice Scottish doctor? Beckett is such a sweetie and he is someone I really would love to see Sheppard getting close to. Or - later on in Season second - Ronan.

McShep though has a big fanbase, and maybe you'll find it. I never did.

Enjoy it ... it's a real good show.

When I do get around to it I won't be going in with any expectations. I might not even like it

You never know, you might be a Sparky shipper...

A word of warning - although I lovelovelove Stargate Atlantis it's not always fantabulous telly. It's a fantastic fandom however.
