Who has several hours to spare?
Oct. 1st, 2008 03:47 pmOk, after spending one evening this weekend talking about SGA a lot I thought I'd give Season 1 a try
Do I need to have seen SG-1 to understand who everyone is and what's going on? And how long will it be before I want to start writing McShep?
Please feel free to write an essay-like comment explaining the whole Stargate history. I think I saw the first few episodes of SG-1 when it aired on Sky but that was many moons ago before I went to university

Up until they discovered another set of addresses, they were limited to travel in the Milky Way, now they're setting off for the Pegasus galaxy. Stargate had a set of bad guys, Atlantis has a different set and is isolated from Earth.
How long until you start writing McShep? I couldn't say. They're an interesting pair, and I've read a lot of friendship fics that could be interpreted as pre-slash and are quite satisfying without the sex. In fact, I'm finding it easier to write them that way, but then again, I do the same with CLex quite often. :-D
The major difference for me from CLex is their ages, their world views, the constraints they live under. There's a lot of danger they share in, so the camaraderie can be (and is) situational. I can see their closeness, but I'm looking for it. Others could find different pairing resonating more strongly for them.
I think part of the appeal for me is that both characters are so flawed emotionally. John is more socially adept, but uses it as a shield. Rodney is a mess, but a lot of his appeal for me is watching him grow beyond his limitations.

McShep though has a big fanbase, and maybe you'll find it. I never did.
Enjoy it ... it's a real good show.

A word of warning - although I lovelovelove Stargate Atlantis it's not always fantabulous telly. It's a fantastic fandom however.
