Have just finished the first half of the All Star Superman arc I am aware that my collection of DC comics is woefully lacking.

I own Red Son (which is awesome) and I've read Dark Knight Returns (which I was less impressed with), True Brit (which is hysterical) and Lex Luthor: Man of Steel

Uh...that's about it.

Rec me other stuff? Preferably trades rather than individual comics *g*

You weren't impressed with Dark Knight Returns?

Pfft!

Hehe! Yeah, I liked bits of it but overall it was a bit blah. I didn't like the art, which put me off a lot

The fight between Batman and Superman at the end was cool though

I haven't read it, but what about a British Superman? John Cleese is credited with being one of the writers http://www.amazon.co.uk/Superman-True-Brit-John-Cleese/dp/1845760123/ref=pd_sbs_b?ie=UTF8&qid=1195574085&sr=1-1 then if a comedy is not what you are looking for, might be best to give it a miss.

It's HILARIOUS!!!

I wasn't much impressed by DKR either. Well, there were some nice scenes. And the end was fun.

Really, really good comics are "Watchmen" (Moore) and "Sandman" (Gaiman), but those aren't DC. "Superman: Birthright" is pretty, and has some cute scenes between young Clark and Lex, but much of it I found rather boring. "DC: The New Frontier" (Darwyn Cooke) is still a WIP I think, but it's very, very good. It's like a reimagining of the beginnings of the Justice League, set in the Cold War era. Then there's "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel", which is pretty and good: business villain Lex at his best/worst.

Oh yes, I read Lex Luthor: Man of Steel too. LOL. I've clearly read more than I think. Hehe!

Thanks for the other recs though :)

Actually, Watchmen and Sandman are DC (IIRC, they started off on Vertigo, aka DC's Kickass Imprint)

I'd have thought any Smallville fan would have fun with Birthright, New Frontier was okay, and Lex Luthor: Man Of Steel was awesome.

Good recs!

I thought they were still Vertigo - mostly I just meant they're not set in the DC main Universe. Well, Sandman is, kinda... there's John Constantine and Dr. Destiny and parts of the JL. Okay, Sandman counts as DC.

Otoh, everything I recced is kinda out of continuity.

Does it have to be DC? Because if not, and if you've not read it yet, I heartily recommend the Serenity TPB, 'Those Left Behind', newly out in hardback. Oh, and don't forget the Heroes Season 1 collected edition. That's also made of win.

Otherwise, DC's 'Vertigo' imprint has given us the wonder that is Preacher. It's a contemporary pulp-western with mystical overtones (imagine the bastard lovechild of Desperado and Supernatural, which was then adopted by Pulp Fiction who let the baby do lots of drugs), and is about as majestically fucked-up as anything I've ever read (humour so dark it's practically a Black Hole, the lampooning of EVERYTHING EVER, and so on) (Oh, and it has The Colt. More accurately, it's got The Colt's tougher twin brothers. Which make The Colt look like a cap gun. It could even be argued that The Colt is in fact a meta-imitation of these two)

Seriously. Preacher is unlike anything you've ever read, and you'll eaither love it, or be disgusted by it. Check out the first TPB, 'Gone To Texas' and see what you think.

I just mentioned DC because I've read loads of Marvel, yet all my favourite comic characters are DC and it struck me that I should read more

I have read Those Left Behind but Heroes comics? OOH! Didn't know about those!

I've read all of Preacher and loved it to bits, as well as being rather disturbed by a lot of it though. Hee!

Well, I recommend Identity Crisis, Batman: Hush, Shogun of Steel (Elseworlds), Green Arrow: Archer's Quest, The Authority Vol 1: Relentless, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Superman/Batman: Absolute Power, and Buffy Season Eight. Also if you don't mind a few Marvel things, I highly HIGHLY recommend Runaways, and also from Wildstorm (which is a part of DC): Ex Machina. Unless you just want DC. But those are my recs and I think every comic collection should include those.

I was thinking about picking up Red Son soon. One of the online stores is having sales on trades and I'm tempted. I need to buy three to get free shipping. ;)
