Penguins, Hockey and more Penguins
Sep. 22nd, 2016 07:20 am(I posted this on Imzy yesterday morning but LJ was down for me most of yesterday)
Yesterday we went to The Deep in Hull for a slightly delayed birthday trip. I'm always a bit nervous about driving somewhere I've never been before but it was actually a pretty straightforward drive. Bill asked to listen to Hamilton as he'd heard a lot of people talking about it but didn't really know what it was. I need no encouragement to listen to Hamilton but the songs are going to be stuck in my head forever again now :D
I do love going to The Deep. I have an annual pass so it didn't cost me anything to get in and I got to flail over all of the penguins. We learned from the guide that one of them is called Stanley which amused me no end.

This is Stanley. You can tell which one is which because they all have different coloured bands on their flippers

We went back to the same restaurant for dinner that we went to the day before because they'd given us a 20% off voucher. I had a delicious steak and Eton Mess for dessert.
For those of you who don't know I got into Pens hockey because of Sid and Geno but after a few games I found myself growing rather attached to Phil Kessel. I grew even more attached when I found out his backstory so he's pretty much my favourite player now. Much like fandoms your favourite player finds you not the other way around :-p
He injured his hand right at the start of the playoffs and had surgery not long after they won the cup. His hand was pretty heavily bandaged during the photos of his day with the cup.
Anyways during dinner I got a Twitter DM with a link to an interview with him. His hand is healed and he'll be back when the season starts. I may have had a lot of Feeelings

I'm just so happy to see him smiling and ready to play again
When I got hom I found the Dragon Age colouring book that my friend Kate had made had arrived. I am so looking forward to making it look all pretty.

I certainly have enough colouring supplies
Also in the mail one of my FB had sent me a little something for my birthday

I was dubious but it actually tastes really nice!
We hadn't been home long when I saw someone on Twitter mention that Sweden were playing. Bad me for not knowing the schedule. So I tuned in and they won 2-0! Maybe the curse is finally broken!
This morning I woke up to a million notifications on my phone. Apparently not content to break me while I was having dinner Phil also had to break me while I was asleep
So, the backstory is that when USA announced their World Cup roster there was a BIG outcry about Phil not being included. I mean as it turns out he was injured by the time the tournament started and wouldn't have been able to play anyway.
Now, Phil is generally a quiet and quite serious guy. He doesn't really like being in the limelight and just wants to play hockey. He hasn't said anything at all about not being included on the World Cup roster. Until now
USA played Canada last night and if they lost they would be eliminated from the tournament.
The lost, and pretty much as soon as it happened this tweet appeared.

EVERYONE lost their shit! The tumblr tag for Phil Kessel is just pages and pages of this tweet. The entirety of hockey fandom I think wanted to just give him the World Cup trophy for this tweet alone. This man very rarely makes jokes and doesn't even use social media that much. The timing and the content was just perfect. I think winning the Stanley Cup has been good for him (and, you know, being on a team that actually appreciates him but I won't go into that)
Today is Bill's last day in England so we're going to venture into York city centre and do some shopping. I should shower and get dressed...
