I saw Thor 2 about a week ago and totally forgot to write up my thoughts. So here they are. Obviously this contains all the spoilers
So Thor is the only MCU movie I didn’t see at the cinema and in all honesty he’s probably the member of the Avengers I have the least interest in. Couple that with the fact that despite my deep love for Tom Hiddleston I can never forgive Loki for killing Coulson and I went into this movie with very little in the way of expectations.
Boy was I wrong!
In terms of tone this movie reminded me very much of the first Iron Man movie. The blend of drama and humour is perfect and I had to physically clamp my hand over my mouth when Cap turned up because I could not stop laughing. Brilliantly done! Best MCU cameo since Nick Fury first turned up at the end of Iron Man.
The plot is nicely done (although I must admit I found the villains distracting mostly because they looked like a combination of the elves of Middle Earth and Teletubbies)
What I found most interesting is that Loki comes across as much more sympathetic in both Thor movies than he did in Avengers. During Thor 2 I actually forgot that I hated him and shed a few tears when he ‘died’. Not sure how I feel about the revelation at the end that he’s now taken the throne. His grief over the death of Frigga seemed genuine so I don’t know if he planned all along to fake his death or whether he just took advantage of a situation when it presented itself. I’ll be interested to see what other people think.
But overall I liked it a lot. Probably not enough to see it 5 times like I did with Iron Man or even the 3 times I saw Avengers but it’s definitely one of the better MCU movies!
I know Hiddles isn’t contracted for any more movies but I do wonder how they are going to resolve his storyline otherwise.

Date: 2013-11-07 02:02 pm (UTC)I enjoyed this film a lot. As I don't like the Avengers movie, I just blank out the details of what happened in it and enjoy the Asgardian twisted bromance.
FWIW, I think Loki just took advantage of the situation. And if that is the last time we see the character, he's effectively won, hasn't he? He's replaced Odin and no one, not even Thor, has realised.
Mind you, Odin is such an obnoxious old git it's hard to believe anyone would miss him.

Date: 2013-11-07 02:19 pm (UTC)Odin is definitely a bit of a git so I must admit I wasn't entirely sad. However, I'm a bit nervous about what Loki will do with all this power now that he has it

Date: 2013-11-07 02:43 pm (UTC)There is some debate over how teared up Hiddleston actually was and how much was tweaking that particular reporter (with whom he'd previously done some very silly stuff). The buzz on every industry blog I normally follow is that a) Thor 3 has now been green lighted because of the enormous amount of money the film has made in Europe/Asia before opening in the US and b) that if Disney/Marvel isn't at least talking about a "Loki" film, they're crazy, based on the character's popularity.
And, yes, you've got a great setup for a third film because who knows what Loki will do as ruler of Asgard -- even if he's having to masquerade as Odin for a while to do it. Worse, no Frigga to possibly act as a check.
