That is the sound of my ugly sobbing
Aug. 2nd, 2013 04:11 pmI finally finished Spartacus. I was warned the end would break me. I thought I was prepared. I was not
So, having read up on the RL events, I went in prepared that Spartacus was going to lose and that he and his gang were going to die.
I was expecting Crixus to die but I had failed to read that he died before the final battle so that shocked me a bit. And, wow, Tiberius is a little shit. I actually felt sorry for him for a bit but then he raped Kore and I was just waiting for him to die. Wasn't quite as satisfying as Ashur's death but at least it happened.
So, the finale. Yeah, I was prepared (or so I thought) and I actually found the battle scene a little silly. I mean it was great but every time one of the main characters died there was a pause in the fighting. Agron and Nasir knelt beside Castus when he died, Gannicus got to say goodbye to Saxa. I just don't understand how these people didn't get killed while they were kneeling there. Obviously the writers wanted us to have a proper farewell to these characters but it felt a little bit unrealistic.
Naevia's death was the most well done of the bunch I think. No one came rushing to be at her side as she breathed her last, and the way she looked up to the sky you just knew she was ready to go and be with Crixus (gah I am welling up again)
So I was actually fine and didn't cry at all until after the battle was over. The moment that got me was after Gannicus is crucified and he hallucinates himself back in the arena with the crowd cheering. And he sees Oenomaus and now I am crying again.
And from that point to the end I didn't stop. Bawled all the way through Spartacus' death scene and right through the end credits.
Overall the show was fantastic. I'd say the first few episodes of S1 and S3 in general were weaker than the rest but apart from that it's one of the best shows I have ever seen. Brilliantly written, acted and directed.
And I just found out Jed Whedon was involved with it which makes me even more excited for Agents of SHIELD
So while we're still in hiatus for most of the good shows I've decided to watch some old shows that everyone but me has seen. I'm starting with The X-Files. I did used to watch this show but I stopped fairly near the beginning (whenever it was that Scully got abducted). Time to give it another shot I think
Also on the list:
Xena
Stargate: SG-1
Stargate: Atlantis
Farscape
Star Trek: TOS

Date: 2013-08-02 04:01 pm (UTC)Around the fifth episode or so of season 2, yes.
I've decided to watch some old shows that everyone but me has seen.
Everyone but you and me. Well, I've seen The X Files, although I kind of dropped out around the same time as David Duchovny. But no, the others are ones I've not seen either.
Having said that, there are three on that list that are on my list of things to watch too - I'm on a gradual watch-through of Stargate: SG-1 right now (the other two being Farscape and SGA). Be interested to know what you make of it. For what it's worth, the advice I received (and went with) was, start with the '94 movie, then move onto SG1 itself.
