hilsLast weekend I attended the Asylum 10 convention in Birmingham. Well, sort of. I headed down with a couple of the guys from Random Acts to do a charity collection drive for Shelter on the Saturday and then on Sunday I just hung out.
It was actually a lot of fun. I got to hang out with all my friends without the stress of epic queues and rushing about.
On the Friday I had a slightly surreal experience
We amused ourself by playing Cards Against Humanity while we waited to check in. I've never played it before and OMG so much fun. We all laughed a lot.
While we were playing someone came around handing out name stickers so of course we had to have some fun with them

I decided to go for a sillier option. This became significance later
And, of course, we had to have someone as Cas
Then I got promoted to Level 7 :D
Whileabsdax was registering for the convention one of the Rogue Events staff who I know via Twitter came running over and asked if I would help set up the room for the actors because she had to be somewhere else. I was happy to help of course so I went up with her and got the tables arranged.
Several of the actors came up and I was introduced to them all. Kim Rhodes shook my hand and then she saw the name label that I had forgotten I was wearing. She took my hand in both of hers, looked me right in the eye and said 'don't ever think that'. The sticker had only been a joke but the fact that someone I had never met before cared enough to reassure me really did move me. I later thanked her for her words via Twitter. She really is an incredible woman.
The other person who impressed me was Ty Olsson. We were short a table so the staff member I was with asked some other staff members who were eating if they would mind giving up their table if we needed it. Ty came over and told them 'don't you dare get up. we can stand'. Such a gentleman.
They were only in the lounge for about 20 mins and I was told I could stay when they left as thanks for helping out. Free food and drink = win :D
It was nice actually as one of the volunteers who went to Haiti the past two years was in there with some of her friends so we had a chat and a catch-up. Finally my two RA colleagues showed up and we had a few drinks and went out to dinner. Then we came back and had a few more drinks, enjoyed the view of some bodybuilders who were also there for a convention and finally it was bedtime.
We had an Avengers/SPN meetup in our room later. Mostly of the stuffed toy variety

We got up early the next morning so my two roomies could go and buy convention stuff and I headed down to help set up our collection booth.
The outfit was sort of a Dean cosplay. It's the closest I've come to cosplay anyway
While we were setting up Rogue Events tweeted a photo of the Impala which we realised was parked just outside where we were setting up. We decided to be stealthy and take photos while no one was looking. Unfortunately the plan somewhat backfired because as soon as we got outside all the actors arrived. Didn't stop us taking pictures though :D
We wandered back in with the actors and Ty turned around and started chatting to us about Italian coffee. He really is friendly and nice. Considering I wasn't actually attending the con I came away with a very positive impression of both him and Kim.
Misha popped over to say hi just as we finished setting up but because his schedule was so hectic that was the only time I saw him all weekend. He left early the next day to head up to Scotland to hang out with the GISHWHES winners.
The collection went really well though. We wound up with 11 bin liners full of donated items and nearly £600 in cash donations.
A bunch of us went out for dinner on the Saturday night and we discovered a cocktail called Benny's Bourbon Special. Naturally we all had to order one and we tweeted this photo to Ty
Sunday was fun. Someone from Shelter arrived in the morning to collect our donated items and while I was waiting for himenchantersnight showed up for visit. She helped me load the items into the van and we had a coffee and a catch up. While we were chatting we got talking to some other girls who were attending the convention and the subject of other fandoms showed up. I took the opportunity to flail about Hannibal and then I gave a copy of Teen Wolf S2 to one of them who hadn't seen it yet. I consider that my random act of kindness for the day :-p
Sunday's outfit was a Stark on the Iron Throne
enchantersnight and I went out for lunch and had a lovely meal at a pub just down the road.
The afternoon/evening was spent hanging out in the bar and chatting to lots of other fangirls. Ended up with nearly 20 new Tumblr followers which I guess just shows that Tumblr is the primary medium for fangirling these days
We ended up playing sleep Buckeroo on a poor unsuspecting person
absdax realising the slogan for her deoderant is 'even angels will fall'. Probably not the best thing to wear to an SPN con so soon after the finale
