I tried. I gave SPN 8x01 a shot but I just can’t
So we’ve got Sam, who I don’t even recognise, and Dean keeping secrets from him yet again.
I give up. This show is going round and round in circles but diluting the characters each season so they’re not even recognizable any more.
It was like an episode of Lost with all the ruddy flashbacks!
The only things I liked about the episode where Dean talking about the purity of Purgatory. Reminds me of John missing the war. Dean’s never really been able to handle civilian life so I can see him almost feeling at home in a world that’s a constant war against monsters.
And I liked Kevin.
I’m sure Cas is going to turn up before the end. Dean’s ‘I saw enough’ was vague enough for it to happen but at this point I don’t even care.
So, it’s been a good ride but I’m done I’m afraid.

Date: 2012-10-06 08:16 am (UTC)But yeah. Baby's back, Kevin is fucking awesome, Crowley just gave us a reminder of the fact that he is, in fact, evil (which I think was quite necessary, since we're so fond of him as a fandom, and I feel like sometimes we forget he's the bad guy), feral!Dean was awesomely done, Dean missing the purity of Purgatory did indeed make sense, and there's no way we've seen the last of Cas... basically, I'm gonna give it a shot, and hope that S8 can break some of what S6 and S7 broke.
All that being said, though - I'm sorry the episode didn't work for you. :( -hugs- Also, only tangentially related to this post, but I've never actually seen Lost... is it worth watching? I'm always happy to find another fictional world to hide away in.

Date: 2012-10-06 09:46 am (UTC)I have ways to analyse around Sam's current story so it makes sense for him and I'm actually TOTALLY buying into it now. But yeah, I was yelling OOC for almost all the episode at first for him, so I completely GET where you're coming from.
Dean's story is perfect in my mind though. It's almost exactly what I expected. I have no trouble with secrets. Because I don't see it as hiding stuff from Sam, more Dean being his own person and having his own life and thus having stuff about himself that he KEEPS to himself. That feels like progression to me.
Far from this being circular, I think what's happening this season is BREAKING the cycle - both Dean and Sam are forging their own separate identities, coming into their OWN. Which is the opposite of diluting their characters.
All the hints about Cas are awesome to me!
Did you not know there were gonna be flashbacks? I'm cool with them.
Erm... so basically this looks like the breaking point when it comes to us and our SPN disagreements. Now I've got over the confusion of Sam (which was interestingly my single major issue with the episode) my absolute LOVE for the episode and the direction the season is going has just been jumping from strength to strength. I'm buzzing. I'm PSYCHED. This season feels like EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WANTED from the show.
So... um... yeah. Sorry the canon's not doing it for you any more. Thanks for disagreeing with me for so long, it's been a blast! :p And, uh, hope you enjoy Merlin this weekend ;p
