My LJ will be 10 years old this November.

Wow.

Ten years ago I was a very different person to the one I am today. I've grown a lot and am a lot more confident in who I am. Ten years ago I was reluctant to stand up for myself about anything, I was very shy and embarassed to talk about my hobbies with anyone. The idea of talking to an actor I admire would never have even crossed my mind.

But at the same time the posts I was doing back in 2001 are not all that disimilar to the posts I do now. Fandom has been a big part of my life since I first got into it while I was at univeristy. The fact that I'm still so heavily involved now tells me that this part of me isn't going to change any time soon. The fandoms themselves may change (I've been through a fair few in those ten years) but my desire to be involved will not.

It's interesting that I was having a discussion with someone a while back when I was getting abuse from RL people I know over Misha's tweets to me. This person, I'm sure with good intentions, advised me to get a life and then the fandom stuff wouldn't seem like such a big deal.

The thing is fandom is my life. I don't mean that in a sad loser type way. I have a job that I enjoy, I get on well with my colleages and I see my RL friends when my crazy shifts allow me to but it's fandom that makes the day to day stuff more fun. I like checking in on Twitter and LJ and chatting about the shows and actors we all love, and RL stuff too. It's called social networking for a reason, because that's exactly what it allows me to do. Like, for example, I met [livejournal.com profile] oddlyfamiliar because we both offered to help mod [livejournal.com profile] rec_hymenated. We would never have met otherwise and it turns out that we live fairly close to each other and now we do stuff like play video games together and go to cons.

[livejournal.com profile] jacqui_hw and I met in the Buffy fandom and even though that show has been over for years we're still BFFs and have lived together for the past seven years. I introduced her to Psych, she introduced me to Community so fandom still plays a big part in our lives even though our primary fandoms are different now.

And as I said a few days ago I still love doing conventions because it's a great way to meet new people and make new friends.

So I hope that in another ten years (when I will be in my 40s - oh, god!) I'm still involved in fandom and going to conventions. Because it makes me happy and that's what life is all about. Being happy.
