The epic A5 report
Nov. 1st, 2010 11:45 pmI should probably preface this by saying I was not particularly looking forward to A5. I was looking forward to seeing all my friends but in terms of the actual con I wasn't really that bothered. Having met half the guests at Chicon (would have been 4/6 if Richard hadn't dropped out) I just felt like kind of a creeper seeing them again just a couple of weeks later and coupled with the fact I had heard nothing but horror stories about Rogue Events I was just not feeling much at all about it.
Well, how wrong could I be? I may have been the exception but I had no problems at all with anything and all the guests were amazing. I think I would say it's the best con I've been to. It's certainly the best SPN con I've been to.
I'm not going to write up the panels unless it's something that directly relates to me. I videod pretty much all of Misha's Saturday panel and that will come later as it takes a bloody long time to upload (I miss Chicago Macdonald's super-fast wifi) and I'm sure there's video and reports of the other panels too. I'll mention the major things but I did have to miss a couple of panels because of scheduling conflicts (I was with Misha and he comes first always)
So, we started off on Friday. Except we didn't really. The only thing happening on Friday was registration and a ghost tour that I wasn't doing. Registration was running late but I didn't mind as I was hanging out in the bar with
littlehollyleaf and
katie_f_thomas. While we were there I bumped into one of my Twitter friends, Denise, who had come over from Germany for the con and a bit later I found
dametokillfor who was waiting for her roomies to arrive.
Our room wasn't ready when we got there so we had a drink and then headed up to dump our stuff. We got back downstairs, sat around for a bit more as things were still running late and then eventualy I got to register. I was really expecting things to go wrong but it didn't at all. I mean their registration process seemed a bit overly-complicated to me but I got everything I needed with no hassle at all. Swapped my Richard photo op for a credit note which I used to buy a coffee lounge with Misha (more on that later) and it was all good. Got chatting to a couple of lovely Scottish girls when I was in line who were Rogue Events veterens so they explained how everything worked to me.
That's one of my favourite things about cons. Everything I did by myself I got chatting to people because we all have a common interest and everyone was really friendly.
So after I'd registered I bumped into another Twitter friend, Marchia and I also found
takadainmate and
cienna so I had a chat with them for a while.
Finally
oddlyfamiliar called to say she had arrived and there was much flailing and squeeing. We chatted for a while and then she went off with her friends Holly and Gabby to register and I took some much needed quiet time to sit and tweet.
imora_mi_savur came over to say hi briefly (I barely saw you all weekend *sniff*)
Not long after
oddlyfamiliar got back I received a somewhat amusing phone call from
littlehollyleaf who said that during registration they'd been talking to a girl in the line and someone had come over thinking this other girl was me. Hee! Well, she did have red curly hair and glasses. Anyway, the clone of me was
enchantersnight and we wound up adopting her for the weekend as it was her first con and she didn't know anyone. We helped her take her stuff up to her room and then decided to go and get some food.
We had delicious pizza for dinner in the hotel bar which was thankfully on offer (although it was on offer when we were here for Roadhouse last month too so methinks maybe they are fibbing) and at one point a girl called Cat asked if she could sit with us as she didn't know anyone. Apparently we must look like the sort of fangirls to adopt strays ;) She was sweet though and I saw her around a few times over the weekend.
After that we freshened up and then headed down to the party for a bit. We ran into
takadainmate,
cienna and
burkesl17 pretty much as soon as we arrived and this is where it started to go wrong (*g*). Seems I inadvertantly found myself in the middle of a group of Balthazar fangirls. Urgh! ;)
Now I am one of those contrary people who likes to go against the grain just because. Now I've never particularly liked Balthazar. I think he's a poor imitation of Gabriel and honestly more than anything I don't like the actor. His face looks like it's made of plastic and his delivery of the lines was just kind of urgh. But the more I heard people squeeing about him the more my dislike increased until I found myself vowing to have Gabriel kill him in my next fic (even if this is totally OOC for Gabriel). So that was fun ;)
Unfortunately later Misha validated the Balthazar fans so I don't think I'm going to win this one. LOL.
I am not a big dancer but I was eventually coaxed onto the dancefloor where we rocked out (and took silly photos which I don't have copies of yet) to SPN songs until the party was over.
After that I headed up to my room and wound up watching bad horror movies until the wee hours. I caught the end of the Amityville remake and then we watched most of Halloween: Ressurrection which was plain awful.
After that we finally went to sleep as we had an early start ahead of us in the morning.
Next: Saturday - where the truly epic shit occurred
