Leaving concrit is actually hard

So, I've ranted in the past about how people (mostly the anon meme) should leave concrit for the authors of fics rather than ranting about them elsewhere.
Turns out it's not actually that easy.
I read a big bang fic yesterday and I was really enjoying it until partway through Jared suddenly turned into Spike and started talking about the 'bloody weather' and things like that. I enjoyed the fic, it was a cute little story, and I was going to rec it but the Britishisms really put me off.
So, I decided to contact the author.
It's always really hard to know what to say. If you just charge in and say 'here's a list of all the things that are wrong with your fic' it's likely to either cause the author to ignore you or put them off writing again. I spent ages figuring out how to word what I wanted to say so I sort of understand why a lot of people don't leave concrit.
But it all turned out okay. The author got back in touched and was grateful for the feedback. I'm going to help her fix it up.
