I'm a bit conflicted about the current big bang discussion that's going on.

For those of you who are not aware [livejournal.com profile] spnpermanon has set up a dedicated big bang post where each story gets its own dedicated thread for comments.

Now, personally speaking I can see this from both sides. My own feelings on the meme aside I can understand that people might not feel comfortable leaving criticism with their name against it. While a lot of authors are able to handle concrit there are those who can't. Not only is there the risk of upsetting someone, the last thing anyone wants is some pushy BNF launching an attack on some small person in fandom. I'm not saying it would happen but it could.

With it like this people are able to express themselves honestly and without fear of any sort of backlash. Coupled with that no one is forcing any of the authors to look at their thread.

BUT

Of course this is open for abuse. All it takes is one person with a grudge to start flinging shit around and rather than concrit you've got bashing. And, of course, with no names on the meme you don't know who is posting what. It could be one person posting multiple negative comments and no one would know. It's essentially a lisence for people to say whatever they want without being accountable. So the good is also the bad.

Of course the one major problem for me is that a lot of people will be using the meme to decide whether they read something or not so I can imagine myself losing some potential readers as a result of this.

I'm just steering well clear of my thread when it happens. My readers have the right to express their opinion about my fic in whatever way they feel is appropriate, but that doesn't mean I have to read it. I know there are people in fandom who don't like me, and I know there are people out there who don't like my fic. My fandom presence and my fic have been bashed on the meme at one time or another.

I think you all know that I have serious self-esteem issues when it comes to my writing. I've posted about it on here before. I spent months working on my big bang fic. It's been through several drafts and three betas. I started writing it in March and I'm still tweaking it. I freely admit that I would not be able to handle seeing people rip it to shreds.

So, essentially I don't resent the meme for doing what they're doing but I won't be reading whatever they have to say about my fic.

For some more well thought out arguments than this [livejournal.com profile] ibroketuesday has posted in favour of the meme here and [livejournal.com profile] vichan has posted a counter-argument here
