Sam/Castiel is a viable pairing
Jun. 3rd, 2010 06:47 pmI've been having some interesting chats with various people about Sam/Castiel over the past few days.
Now obviously Dean/Castiel is my OTP but I have to say I have been shipping Sam/Castiel as a backup pairing for almost as long as I've been shipping Dean/Cas. I think I'm just drawn to the less mainstream pairings. LOL.
But a lot of people don't get it, and that's totally fine. I'm not about to tell anyone who they should and shouldn't be shipping. But what I did want to do is make a few notes about why I ship them for those of you who were wondering. I'll pop it behind a cut as it's likely to get rambly
So, I'll start at the beginning. I first started shipping Sam/Castiel last summer when I decided to rewatch the whole show from the beginning. I found the episode Houses of the Holy absolutely fascinating when looked at alongside the events of S4.
What particularly struck a chord with me was Sam during the episode though. Where he talks about praying every night and how he is willing to believe that angels are real when Dean is convinced that they're not. I quickly found myself imagining conversations between Sam and Castiel whether they talked about Sam's faith even with the whole demon blood thing that came later.
Fast forward to It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester and we have Sam and Castiel's first meeting. Sam, predictably, is adorable and goes into full-on fanboy mode. Yes, Castiel is aloof with him and makes a jibe about the demon blood but that's where his character is at this point. He's the same with Dean apart from the little smile on the park bench. At this point Castiel is all about orders and getting the job done.
But if you look at how they are in S5 something has changed. Sam is the one Castiel calls in Good God, Y'all when they're in the hospital and not Dean. Where did he even get Sam's number from? They didn't really talk when Cas branded their ribs so at some point during S4 he must have got hold of Sam's number from somewhere? Right? Okay, that last part might just be fannish projection, but the point is at this point Castiel feels as comfortable talking to Sam as he does Dean. Yes, he's pissed at Dean for getting him to rebel but he has cause to be even more pissed at Sam for setting Lucifer free in the first place so there's clearly something there.
By the time we get to The Song Remains The Same Castiel is calling Sam his friend and willing to risk his life to keep Sam safe. I don't think this is just because he knows that losing Sam will break Dean. Look at the way he lies to Sam about whether it would be better if he'd never been born. He doesn't need to offer comfort like that but he cares about Sam to do it anyway.
Personality wise they're more similar too. Both into the research and the book-geekery. Sam and Castiel have a hell of a lot more in common with each other than Dean and Castiel do when you think about it in those terms. Also in terms of feeling frustration with Dean. It's not really surprising that the two of them team up in The Point of No Return to stop Dean from saying yes to Michael. They go about it in different ways but the feeling behind it is the same.
And when Cas comes back after banishing himself Sam looks just as worried/relieved as Dean is that he's okay.
It's lots of little things I guess is the point of this post but really it boils down to Sam having faith where Dean never did. I think this puts him on a similar wavelength to Castiel (before Cas realises God has abandoned him) and they just seem to fit. In my mind anyway.
That explain it for anyone who was wondering why I ship Sassy? Or am I just talking crap as usual? LOL
