Books vs films

hilsI've kind of got it into my head that I need to re-read Stardust and Northern Lights (The Golden Compass for you US types) before the films come out. Then I started thinking about it. If I read the books again then I'll only wind up making comparissons when really the films should be able to stand up on their own merit.
What do you guys think? Do you prefer to have the books fresh in your mind before you go and see the film adaptations? I certainly didn't do it with any of the Harry Potter books when the films came out but I read The Da Vici Code before the film came out.
