The second day of our holiday took us to Southampton. Now famous for having the most expensive parking in the world ever. £12 for 5 hours I think. The reason for our visit to Southampton was to do the Titanic Walk which takes you around the city to all the monuments to RMS Titanic which sailed from Southampton. As it turned out the city also has connections with Jane Austen and Nelson but more on those when we get to the relevent photos. The Titanic Walk took us a while to get started as the map was pretty useless. We then spent about half an hour trying to find the first marker but eventually [livejournal.com profile] drbillbongo spotted it. YAY

The first marker. A monument to the band on the Titanic

The notes at the bottom are Near My God To Thee which is what is believed to be the last song the band played

A monument to the engineers on board ship, including Thomas Andrews, the ships designer.

Nothing to do with Titanic I just thought it was a cool gate

The guardian of Burger King ;)

This was actually inside a post office and we had to go in to take pictures. A bit embarassing really

The Dolphin Hotel. Nelson, Hardy and Jane Austen have all stayed here (not together though)

A memorial to the crew of the Titanic

I think this was something to do with the Merchant Navy but I can't remember

Me and the anchor

This museum had a bit Titanic exhibit but no photos were allowed inside :(

Nothing to do with Titanic but it made me think of Sharpe

There was a Jane Austen walk too but we didn't have time to do both. Sometimes it crossed paths with the Titanic walk

Some of the crew stayed here the night before Titanic sailed and missed the embarkation. They were probably devastated at the time as they wouldn't get paid but it saved their lives most likely

The whole pub has a Titanic theme

We stopped for a rest and a pint of Guiness (apart from [livejournal.com profile] mum_ra who had to drive). There was a big plan of the ship along the wide side of the wall and a portrait of Captain Smith behind us

This used to be a hotel and a lot of the first class passengers stayed here before embarking

The building is currently for sale
