An observation before bed
Apr. 26th, 2004 01:12 amOk, here's the fandom post I was talking about. I'll put it behind a cut so that those who don't want to read it don't have to.
I was talking to one of my friends tonight about fandom. She is involved in a few fandom communties and whilst she loves BtVS, she doesn't get involved in the community. Why? She feels it is too cliquey. Now, I don't have anything to compare it to since Buffy is my first and only online fandom community, but I suppose my friend has a point.
The Buffy community is definitely split up into specific groups, usually based around mailing lists and these groups seem to rarely intergrate with each other. Am I wrong here? Just something I've noticed.
Again, I may be wrong here, but it also seems that the writers out there who do NC-17 stuff seem to get a lot more attention than those who don't. This may just be my paranoia so feel free to ignore. I've written the occasional smut fic, but it's not something I do on a regular basis, and to be honest I'm not that good at it. Sometimes I feel that if I stuck a couple of hot sex scenes in my fics that they'd get more attention. Maybe, maybe not.
Finally we have the in-crowd. This is a group of people, who, through no fault of their own, seem to be worshipped by 90% of the fandom community. They post in their journal that they got up, scratched their arse and went to work, and they get 20+ comments telling them how funny and wonderful they are. They write a 3 line fic that is just random words pulled out of a hat, and it's labelled as literary genius.
Do other communities have this problem, or is it just Buffy like my friend feels. Thoughts on a postcard.
