Do you ever get day when you just feel content? I've had one of those days today.

First of all I finished Fluffy Seeing Red last night and I've had an overwhelming response to it. I've had more reviews for this one than any of my others. This is either because I did a good job of writing it or because the episode was so bad that people were desperate to read an improved version. Still, I've now got 100 members on my poll list so I must be doing something right.

I'm really starting to look forward to my writing class which starts in about 3 weeks. I've never done anything like this before and it's going to be an excellent opportunity to flex my creative muscles, move away from Buffy fic for a while and work on developing my style.

Took a break from writing today and spent pretty much the whole day reading. I finished Book 5 of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series and read all of book 6. Now I feel the urge to have a good rave about these book so I'll cut to avoid spoiling people.

I don't actually know what made me pick up the first book in this series. I'd heard people mention it before but I'd never really thought about reading them before. Then one day I was in Waterstones and I saw them. On a whim I decided to buy the first one just to see what it was like.

It's very much in the line of Buffy (although the books pre-date the series). Anita Blake is a vampire hunter, employed by the state to execute vampires who break the law. In Anita's world vampires, werewolves and witches all have the same rights as regular human beings.

By day Anita is an animator, someone who raises Zombies for mainly legal reasons such as to settle a debate over a will etc. She is also on loan to the police to help them deal with their more supernatural cases.

The series initially deal with Anita's work on police cases but it also deal with the Master Vampire of the City, Jean-Claude and his infatuation with her. It becomes apparent that Jean-Claude is in love with Anita but she refuses to return them despite her lust for him because he's a vampire (sound familiar anyone).

Things get more interesting when Anita meets Richard. She sees someone handsome, kind and apparently normal (think Riley) and they start to date. However, it transpires that Richard is a werewolf. Despite this he and Anita continue to date until it becomes too much for Jean-Claude. He tells Anita that it's unfair for her to date one monster but not give the other a chance. He inisists that she give him a chance to woo her away from Richard or he'll simpley kill him.

So for the next couple of books we have an intersting situation. Anita is dating both Richard and Jean-Claude. She has feelings for them both but maintains that although she loves Richard she only feels lust for Jean-Claude.

Things change when Jean-Claude is badly wounded to the point where he's dying. Anita realises he means more to her than she first thought and feeds him her blood to save him.

Finally Anita is forced to choose. Richard had proposed to Anita on several occasions but finally he says he doesn't want things to go any further until she's seen him change into his wolf form. After a particularly gruelling battle Richard pounces on Anita and changes on top of her. When he starts feeding on the dead in his wolf form she freaks and runs, finding comfort in Jean-Caude's arms. After a lot of talking Anita and Jean-Claude sleep together.

I have to say I was delighted when this happened. Richard was so broody (like Angel) and had a lot of problems dealing with what he was. Jean-Claude, however, was more interesting and going by the description a hell of a lot sexier. I really thought Anita was going to wind up marrying Richard, and who knows what's going to happen next. I've still got another 4 books to read so anything than happen.

I probably haven't done the series any justice at all but I was just so happy and surprised when Anita chose Jean-Claude that I just had to post it. It was like seeing Buffy and Spike kiss for the first time when no magic was involved.
