Hockey Road Trip - Day 8
Feb. 10th, 2017 09:36 pmWe started the morning with a trip to Pittsburgh Aviary to look at penguins and other birds before heading off to watch the human Penguins play hockey. It was a really nice little place, the staff were friendly and one lady said she hoped we enjoyed the game (we were all wearing Pens jerseys of course)

It was a really cool. There were lots of enclosures you could walk around in and the birds were just free to wander. They weren't bothered in the slightest by the presence of people

These two were my faves. They are the most judgmental looking owls I have ever seen

After the Aviary we headed to Walmart because
morganoconner said they had Pens stuff and obviously I hadn't bought enough yet. I ended up with some pajama pants and another 3 t-shirts. Oops.
Then we made a spur of the moment decision and go to Staples to get the makings of a sign for the game. LOL. We ended up making the sign in the back of the car in the garage next to PPG.

I say 'we' made the sign. What I mean is
morganoconner designed the whole thing and coloured a lot of it.

makaze77 helped with the colouring. I supervised? Gave moral support? Tried to stay out of the way because I don't possess a single artistic bone in my body?

morganoconner was very proud of her copied Pens logo and rightfully so
Once the poster was done we headed inside. There is a giant goalie helmet so of course we had to get a photo inside it

Because we were early and had seats fairly close to the ice we were able to go down and watch the warmups which was AMAZING! If I ever manage to go back to Pittsburgh and get to another game I will do this again for sure. We were so close to everyone and I got some great pics :D
Someone in front of us had a sign for Phil (I think it was actually kind of dickish and referenced the old hot dog thing but he smiled so that was nice).
Towards the end Fehr tossed a puck over the glass to us. Went over my head, sadly, and someone behind me got it. But that was nice of him :D
Um...there's going to be a lot of pics here. Feel free to scroll but I got loads of good ones of pretty much everyone :D

Here I am with my sign :D

Story time: During this game I was at a couple of weeks ago Phil took a shot and it bounced off the bar and missed. This was my first home game and I got to witness firsthand how hard he is on himself about missed shots. For a good couple of minutes (while the ice crew were doing their thing) he skated circles just outside the bench, visibly shaking his head at himself. It was most upsetting.
Eventually after a minute Carl skated over to make sure he was okay and gave him a pat on the back.
And this is the story of how I nearly started crying in the middle of my first ever visit to PPG Arena.

"I kill you."

Carl was a bad boy. I can't remember what it was for. Maybe tripping?

Geno and Gaunce got into a fight with a couple of the Bruins. I don't even know what set it off tbh

And here's my other story from the game which is more personal. I'd been holding up my sign during the breaks when they were putting people up on the jumbotron. It sadly didn't happen but during the second period break I felt a tap on my shoulder and one of the ushers beckoned me to follow him. It was actually quite scary because he didn't tell me what he wanted he just kept motioning me to follow him. So, of course being me, I half convinced myself I was getting tossed out of the game for whatever reason.
But no, they wanted to give me these

It was so lovely of them! I have to say all the staff at PPG were lovely. One of the guys doing security asked to read my sign and told me he hoped I got on the screen and that he loved my accent.
It was a wonderful experience and I'm glad I had the opportunity to do it before everything went to shit in the US. God knows when I'll be able to go back. I certainly have no plans to visit the US while their border control is as crazy as it is. Even some Canadians are being asked to turn over their phones to have their social media and whatnot checked and risk being denied entry to the country. I've been pretty vocal about my opinions on Trump over on Twitter so it's just not worth it for me. I'll have to settle for watching the occasional game stream online.
Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into political rambling. Back to the road trip!
After the game we had a pretty long drive to DC (it was an afternoon game so we weren't driving through the night or anything). And aside from more insanely thick fog it was a pretty straightfoward drive. We stopped at Steak 'n Shake along the way and had milkshakes and hotdogs. The shakes were SO GOOOD OMG

We finally got into DC just after midnight and after so many years I FINALLY got to glomp
tiptoe39. I was so happy. We have been internet friends FOREVER and have been through several fandoms together. It was so great to finally meet her in person. And she gives amazing hugs and is just as wonderful in person as she is online <33333

Considering how late it was we pretty much crashed after having some wine and chocolate and lots of cuddles.
