Well, I wanted to watch this to get my Castiel fix and he wasn't even in it. Imagine my surprise when the episode was FUCKING AWESOME anyway. I may have even preferred it to last weeks. Jury is still out on that one.

This show is confusing me, I have to say, and I don't know if it's me or the show that's changed. A lot of the episodes that were loved by the fandom just did nothing for me at all. I was bored for a good chunk of this season and I had no real interest in the angels/demons storyline. All of a sudden in the last couple of weeks I've got hooked again. I don't know if it's just my epic Castiel love or whether it's just got good again.

Anyway, I loved this even without Cas so YAY. I think it was because it really was like an old school episode. I loved the boys working together and joking and the lack of angst.

It was great

I don't know how I feel about this series yet. I like Castiel (although I was suprised by how different he now seems compared to other angels)> Usually I like funny episodes but there just seems to be so many of them and the series as a whole feels really uneven to me like it can't decide what it's trying to do. That might just be me though :D

Actually that was exactly my problem. Way too many funny episodes

Y'know I don't know if it's so much that there are so many of them but how they're placed? Like things keep getting grouped together, and we ended up with a weird string of funny eps, and then OMG!ANGST! for a string of eps. I have this feeling that they're trying to balance things but it's not really working.

Yeah, exactly! By the time we got to Monster Movie I was so bored of funny episodes that I was just bored. I think if it had come out of nowhere in the middle of all the angst it might have been better. Like this one. A bit of old school hunting after last weeks utterly heartbreaking episode

I feel the same it's not spaced equally either so it's like two apoclypse episodes then four funny ones then two apoclypse etc etc. I mean we're down to the last five episodes and the whole series has mostly just been funny episodes. It feels a bit to me that they came up with this idea of a great big angelv demon story line then when they actually came to write it found that they didn't have enough material to cover the whole series so have spaced them far apart so that the arc lasts the whole series. I'm not saying that's how it was but it feels like that sometimes, I think it's a shame because there was so much potential to some of these angel stories and Sam and Deans story that feel left out. The whole series gone but it doesn't feel like there's been a series worth of development for the characters sometimes I keep forgetting loads of episodes that happened because they didn't seem to be that gripping or have anything really in them. That might again just be me. Sorry I've rambled on so much :D (I've got to say I'm not really looking forward to the next episode all that much)

Hehe!! No, I feel exactly the same way. It's coming together nicely now but there's been a lot of silliness between the good episodes. I haven't seen the preview for next week so I don't know how it looks. I'll watch it though, even if I don't like it

This was the only ep to have seriously bored me all season. I didn't like it at all.

It's interesting this season of SPN is leaving you indifferent cos this is the season it's turned from a show I like to an official new obsession for me :p

Although I think my background has a lot to do with it. Cos I have what you could call a 'history' with Christianity. Not an evil one, I wasn't molested by a priest or anything (!), but I used to be quite a strong Christian, it turned into something constricting and unpleasant for me, and now I'm happily... um... well, agnositic I guess, but I haven't really bothered to define it :p What I always liked about SPN then was the way it very obviously dealt with biblical/religious issues (demons etc) but managed to successfully avoid any head on messages about god. Plus, it had Sam, demonboy, as the brother who prays and believes, and yet who still does all the stuff I was taught as a christian was incompatible with the faith - sex before marriage, murder etc. So it was always kinda nice for me to see god and faith in a layman setting I guess.

Then the angels turn up and well - !!! Since breaking away from Christianity I do LOVE to see its imagery and ideas turned on its head, so having real angels around, and having them DARK and COLD and VIOLENT was just AWESOME for me. It was a bit like... um... validation? Like the show was saying 'look! this Christian stuff is totally NOT like people say it is, if you disagree with it you have a good point!' Obv, it's only a fictional representation, but it was one I related to.

Then there's Cas and his 'descent' into humanity. Another thing I love. Superpowerful beings realising that embracing humaity and it's faults in order to experience it's joys and emotions = <3 <3 <3 to me. I even wrote a dissertation on the subject for my MA! Although that was about robots in sci-fi literature becoming humanised. I just like the idea of our faults being worth it for the good stuff and how you need both. It's how I justify the bad stuff in life I guess :p Oh, and then there's the way Cas's doubts about god etc kinda mirror my own past journey as well isn't there?

God, I didn't mean to dump all that on you! I was just trying to explain why I like the show, I didn't mean to turn it into a psych101. Sorry :p

You and others DO make good points about the funny eps this season. There HAVE been a bit too many and I was 'blah' throughout them (though the teddy bear doctor one was fun :D). Things didn't kick off properly for me until On The Head of a Pin. Still, gotta take the good with the bad, as I say :D Still FAR more balance between the good and the bad than SV...

Oh and ps. This WAS a good ep, but I disliked it violently at the time cos I'd TOTALLY convinced myself the boss was ACTUALLY Castiel and kept expecting him to shapeshift into him at the end with Dean. So when he didn't I was very disappointed :p

I also liked the Monster Movie ep cos I love parodies :p Noir = best part of SV S06, hands down. Doesn't matter if these are out of place or jarring the rest of the season development, I will take them whenever! But that's just me.

I thought it was going to be Castiel too but it makes perfect sense for it not to be. Castiel is having a crisis of faith at the moment. I don't think we'll see him again until they're ready to address that and I don't think they can address it until Dean's head is together again (which it mostly is now). I honestly think Cas needs Dean to help him get through this and now Dean is in a position to do that.

I forsee shippiness coming up.

Yes, now the irrationally CRUSHING self-inflicted disappointment has passed I can see that. It totally wouldn't have made sense to have Cas messing with Dean's mind like that when his own is in such turmoil. He needs someone to guide him at the moment, so he couldn't be guiding Dean as well. Good call show.

I honestly think Cas needs Dean to help him get through this and now Dean is in a position to do that.

And yay to that :) My latest hope? Cas will decide he needs to fall in order to get a more human perspective on the whole god/apocolypse/satan thing, he'll find a way to do it without being reborn like Anna was so he keeps his Holy Tax Account body, he'll turn up on Sam and Dean's doorstep human and confused, collapse into Dean arms and... um... well, then they'll all trundel off and defeat Lilith and Cas will become the 3rd Winchester for season 5. It'll be great, Dean can make it his project to teach him all about humanity and the importance of pie and rock music and they can fall in love and go hunting together and live happily after after!

...I may not have thought all the details through exactly... but it could still happen, yes? :D

Oh no, don't you be doing that! I've already got one epic on my hands - I don't have the time! :p

Besides, I only jumped into writing (as opposed to my previous reading-only status) because SV needed fixing SO BADLY. SPN doesn't need fixing at all so far, so I'm happy to run with what the show gives us.

...though I suppose I could have a go at a drabble or two since I've never tried that before...NO PROMISES though! :p

Damn, I suppose that means I'll have to do it. Don't have time at the moment though. Maybe I'll see how season 4 ends and try and write something over the summer

Aw. Don't feel obligated! Let's both see how the show goes first, maybe an even better bunny will jump at us :)

Well, me too, but this only happened in the last couple of episodes

Hehe!! Me too actually! Wow!

I can't quite put my finger on what's been bothering me up until recently. There have been episodes that I absolutely loved (the first couple, the one where Dean goes back in time and meets his mother, the couple of episodes with Anna) but others have just left me cold.

Really, it wasn't until I started reading Dean/Castiel fics that I suddenly fell back in love with the show.

Hehe!! Me too actually! Wow!

For real? Awesome sauce! :p

Perhaps I've been over-reading your non-squee then. Because it wasn't until Cas' crisis in ep14 I jumped up to OMFG! about everything as well, and actually yes, pretty much all non-angel eps have been shrugged away by me too. Um, the return to highschool one was one I remember being particularly disappointed in, but then I wondered if it was cos my brain said high school = SV High = suck :p Because the absolute best thing about SPN is that it is nothing like SV whatsoever :D (well other than Clark = Angel = Castiel, of course :p).

I think maybe the key thing here is that you were an SPN follower from the beginning, whereas I've been a dabbler. Ergo, with no deep, emotional investment in the show, I had no squee to be dampened and thus was not as disappointed with the not so good stuff.

Glad you've re-found the love though :D And the back in time ep was amazing wasn't it? Time Travel is my favouritest genre EVER and I was squeeing like a squee thing on squee day in squeeland at the scene in the diner ripping off Back to the Future (my GOD I love those films!).

Yeah, don't get me wrong, my SPN disappointment is NOTHING compared to my SV pain

With SPN it was sort of 'Well, this is ok, but it could be better' compared with SV 'OMGITHURTSMAKEITSTOP'
