hils: (Manga me)
[personal profile] hils
This is mostly for the benefit of new people on my flist but anyone is welcome to read of course.

[livejournal.com profile] thisissirius posts all the best 'getting to know you memes'

If you've friended me after January then I have a rather detailed intro post (with photos!) here

But now we're onto me and LJ.

ABOUT YOU/YOUR JOURNAL

o1; What is your Livejournal username? How did you come up with it?

This is so not an interesting story. My name is Hilary. Most people call me Hils for short. The end.

o2; Have you re-named before? If so, what were your old names? If you haven't re-named, what names would you want to rename to?
I've never renamed. I like the fact that my user name isn't fandom specific, given how fickle I can be with my fandoms ;)

o3; How much does your userinfo say about you?
I think it says enough. It doesn't ramble on but everything you need to know is there

o4; How long have you been on Livejournal?
I joined on 13/11/2001 so a LONG time.

o5; What is the longest amount of time you have gone without posting?
Hah? Not posting? What is this madness you speak of? Actually when I first got LJ there weren't many people I know on it so I barely posted at all. Once fandom migrated onto here that was me gone. LOL. I think there's been a couple of periods where I've been on holiday or something.

o6; On average, how many entries do you post a day?
I am trying to cut down. Really, I am. I'm using Twitter for the more inane one line stuff and questions I need answering. But my average posts per day (I actually worked this out) is between 5 and 6

o7; What are your posts normally about?
Oh, god, all sorts. Fandom stuff, fic, icons, interesting things I've seen in the news, random observations, photos. Anything that jumps into my head really.

o8; Is your Livejournal friends only? Why or why not?
I made it friends only a few years ago when my ex-boyfriends girlfriend started leaving annonymous comments. I've mellowed now though and whilst the old stuff is still locked the new stuff is mostly public unless it's something personal

o9; Does your Livejournal have an actual title or are you merely USER @ livejournal?
It's called 'Hourly Wittering' which was coined by my sister [livejournal.com profile] flickums. I don't post every hour I hasten to add...not all the time anyway ;)

10; How long do you see yourself staying on Livejournal?
I'll go when LJ goes. Or if all of fandom migrates to somewhere better all at the same time.

ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS LIST

o1; How many people are on your friends list, not counting private journals, media journals etc?

About 325. This is why I can't comment on everything everyone posts even though I would like to.

o2; Why do you choose to add a person to your friendslist?
I will friend back most people who friend me (unless I suspect you are a troll or a sockpuppet). Generally if I'm the one to friend first it's because I think you sound interesting or I think we'll get along well

o3; Is your friendslist an actual list of people you consider friends or more of a reading list?
It's a bit of both really. Some of my LJ friends I am incredibly close to others not so much. Some of my LJ friends are friends in real life that I introduced to LJ *g*

o4; How often do you read your friendslist?
Every day. Every entry. I may not comment all the time but I read everything you guys have to say

o5; Do you use filters when veiwing your friendslist?
Nope

06; How much do you talk to people on your friendslist off of Livejournal?
There a bunch of you that I talk to on messenger every day. Some of you I talk to occasionally on messenger and others I see in person all the time

o7; Do you do friendscuts? Why or why not?
I have done in the past but I think only once or twice. Mainly when I find that I'm reading stuff from people that I don't have anything in common with and have drifted away from. But I always give people the opportunity to ask to be re-added and I always have.

o8; Do you regularly participate in friending memes? If not, how do you normally find people to friend?
Generally only when I've found a new fandom and want to meet new people in that fandom

o9; How often do you add new friends to your friendslist?
I'm at the point now where I generally only friend back those who friend me first. It's just a numbers thing. Occasionally though if I stumble across someone who seems really interesting I will make the first move and friend.

10; Do your friends have to have things in common with you?
Not at all. One of the things I love about my flist is how diverse it is. I've got all ages, genders and sexual orientations on here. I've got people with vastly differing political opinions to my own. So long as people are interesting and don't go out of their way to be offensive it's all good.

ABOUT YOUR ICONS/USERPICS

o1; How many userpics do you get maximum? How many of those slots do you actually use?

I've got 126 slots and I'm currently using 109. It was full until a couple of weeks ago when I forced myself to have a clearout.

o2; Do you mostly use icons made by yourself or by others?
Mostly my own these days but I have a handful made by others too

o3; Do you have your own icon making community? How often do you post in it?
My icons get posted here and cross posted to relevant fandom communities. I generally do an icon post once every couple of weeks unless I'm on holiday and then it might be more often.

o4; What fandoms are most frequently seen in your userpics?
Smallville at the moment with Merlin a close second.

o5; How do you find icons to use?
More often than not I'll use my own but when I don't I'll browse communities or ask my flist for recommendations

o6; How often do you upload new icons to your userpics?
Not all that often actually. I'll upload one if I need it for a specific reason

o7; Which of your userpics do you use the most?

o8; Which of your userpics do you like the most?

o9; The old minumum number of userpics was three. Could you see yourself 'surviving' on three userpics now?
Hah! I remember those days! *shudder* That would be a no

10; What do your userpics say about you?
That I like pretty boys, slash, and have too many fandoms

ABOUT YOUR FANDOMS

o1; How many fandom communities are you a part of?

Roughly 200.

o2; Do you join fanfic or icon communities or only the general communites?
Generally I'll join the shipper communities first and then branch out from there.

o3; How many fandom communities do you moderate?
Uh...15 apparently although most of them aren't active any more

o4; How often do you check fandom communities for posts?
Every day. I don't filter out comms

o5; Do you contribute to fandom? If so by way of what?
Well, someone (who was too cowardly to put their name to the comment) accused me of getting too involved but I'm not sure that's actually possible. Anyway, yes, I do like to contribute as much as I can. I write fic and make icons, host challenges, do rec posts and as a new one for me I am organising my first fan meetup too.

o6; Which fandoms are you most active in?
Right now it's Merlin with Smallville still loitering in the background.

o7; What do your choice of fandoms say about you?
I dunno actually. I suppose it says that I like slash, even though I have het fandoms too. The majority of my fandoms are TV shows so I guess it says that I probably watch too much telly.

o8; Do you make friends based on fandom?
Most of the time, yes. The thing I love about LJ and fandom is that it lets you meet people you wouldn't necessarily meet under normal circumstances. There's loads of people on my flist that I met through fandom and even though we've drifted into different things we're still friends

o9; Have you ever read (or been featured in) fandom_wank?
Hehe! No, actually. Is this something I should be aiming for? LOL

10; What is one thing you wish you could change about fandom?
Shipper wars.

Definitely. It's good to have different opinions out there and meet people you might not meet otherwise. I've met some amazing people through LJ

10; What is one thing you wish you could change about fandom?
Shipper wars.

But then it just wouldn't be fandom ;)

Hehe! You know what I mean. There can be shipper wars without it getting all bitchy and personal

From: [identity profile] miranda-skye.livejournal.com
Yeah, I know - which is why I try not to be anything more than mildly amused by any OMGMYPAIRINGISSOMUCHMORECANON type stuff - it's too easy to get drawn into something that quickly degenerates into a slanging match. And after a solid year of watching (and occasionally being drawn into) slanging matches on a comm, I can't be doing with it

But then again, I mostly *write* RPS, which seems slightly less prone to the worst of it

RPS is my happy place. Except when people kill Colin in fics *grr*

From: [identity profile] miranda-skye.livejournal.com
*Merlin* RPS (which I read rather than write) is my happy place, but the average angst and woe level in my main fandom is considerably higher than Merlin fandom anyway :p

How could anyone want to kill Colin? *cries*

Date: 2009-03-15 05:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hils.livejournal.com
Hehe! I've only had three RPS fandoms and they've all been realitvely angst free, thankfully.

I know! Poor Colin!

Do unspeakable things to him, yes; kill him, no...

I think it depends on the fandom - sometimes it just encourages angst. I have to admit I tend to prefer angst but there's something about Merlin that makes me squee over the fluffy stuff too :p

Date: 2009-03-15 05:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hils.livejournal.com
Yeah, Merlin is definitely my fluffy fandom and I'd like it to stay that way

*carefully hides her less-than-happy fic from your wrath* :p

I love the range of fic you get in Merlin fandom - and the vast majority of it is pretty good. Let that never change...

Date: 2009-03-15 05:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hils.livejournal.com
Hehe! I'd never rain down wrath on unhappy Merlin fics. I just probably won't read them unless they end happily. I've written plenty of angsty fics but they always end well

Shipper wars.

You are so lucky you aren't part of my main fandom.
There was a massive, massive shipper war a few months ago.
There were really massive arguments over these slash RPS pairings - my OTP won in the end, heh.
But it was all over LJ and had actually branched out to other websites.
So yeah, it'd be nice to get rid of shipper wars.

Hehe! I mean everyone has their OTPs and I appreciate that but really there's no need to slag people who like different things

Thank you for writing this out! :)
If I got this correctly, I have to thank rohaa for you befriending me, but hey, it still makes me happy. :)
And, uh, I admire how many things you manage to squeeze in into one day.

BTW, the panicking Sebastian icon is my favorite too. :D

Hehe!!! Yes [livejournal.com profile] rohaa has been singing your praises and I love your Merlin vids!

Yes, what would I do without her? :) Glad to hear you liked the vids, though.
BTW, just out of curiosity, do you get different treatment as a female IT techie?

Oh, yes. Mostly patronising comments from male users or surprise that I actually know what I'm talking about

From: [identity profile] solanyxe.livejournal.com
Yeah, I thought so. :(
Would love to be there to see their face (hear their voice) when they realize you're actually Moss and not Jen. ;)
But with coworkers it's probably all right?
Sorry if I'm being too nosy...

Hee! No, it's fine

Yeah, my colleagues are fine and acknowledge that in some areas I actually know more than they do.
