Answer me this
Mar. 7th, 2009 11:18 pmI paid for more internet time because I am a freak but I need this answered
The handwritten version of my fic is written in the present tense. There is no real reason other than I don't seem to be able to not write Merlin fic in the present tense. It's weird. I read fics in the past tense and it feels weird. I am a freak.
So, tell me this, flist

Maybe I'll post my Merlin picspam since I just paid for 90 minutes of internet time just to ask this question

Date: 2009-03-07 11:38 pm (UTC)Now, if it's done WRONG, then I have a repeated desire to bash my head into the nearest hard object, like my desk or the wall. (Generally, wrong can include many things, but the worst is a person not understanding how to change verbs and sentence structure to stay in the present tense. Makes my inner grammar police shriek and howl and beg for something to throw.)
Not sure if that helped, but I figured I'd toss in my thoughts, for however much they may be worth. LOL

Date: 2009-03-07 11:56 pm (UTC)If that's the way your fic wants to be, then let it be in present tense.

Date: 2009-03-08 12:07 am (UTC)For myself, when I first get a fic idea it usually comes out in present tense about 95% of the time, but that may be because I generally get dialogue first. Sometimes I change it into past tense when I expand it, other times not.

Date: 2009-03-08 12:44 am (UTC)But I will say that I think it works better for shorter pieces where you want that feeling of immediacy and there-ness for the reader. An epic written in the present tense needs to be very well crafted or it just doesn't work as well, imho. Though it can be useful for effect--writing a flashback scene in the present tense while the rest of the story is in past tense, for example.
I think it really depends on the usage, for me. ^^; *is unhelpful*

Date: 2009-03-08 01:07 am (UTC)As long as you have a good beta, most people should be okay, but it is something that isn't used as often.
