Well, that was quite fun. I really noticed the differences between this and new BSG though. I miss new BSG. One thing I did notice was Cassiopeia. Here I was (perhaps naively) thinking that Joss Whedon came up with the whole Companion thing. Well, in BSG they're called Socialators but it's the same thing. You learn something new every day.

Next on the list is Sir Apropos of Nothing by Peter David. Dave gave me this book and assured me I will love it. We shall see...

This will likely be my last book post of the year as I don't think I'm going to get anything else finished before January. 38 isn't a bad number I don't think

The big difference between Cassiopeia and Inara is that by the time Firefly came out the audience and/or the networks were grown-up enough to deal with the concept, whereas back in 1978 Cassiopeia got to be a Socialator for about half an episode before being turned into a nurse and stuffed into a uniform that covered her from neck to mid-calf.

Ahh! I see. Yeah, the book I think was just based on the pilot. I did enjoy it though

I loved original BG quite a lot, at the time (and for some years afterward). It was pretty cheesy, and some of the scripts were truly terrible, but it had something at its heart that made it special. And there was always an optimism to it, so watching it didn't leave you feeling more miserable than you did when it started.

Except when there were singing robots. Then you just had to hang your head in shame.

Singing robots? Oh dear...

I've actually put the TV film (which I think was the pilot) on my Amazon wishlist. I'm slightly scared...

It'll look pretty ropey, I think, if you're not looking at it with rose-tinted nostalgia spectacles (I was thinking this about Arthur of the Britons the other day - it'd never sell to the Merlin generation, even though it was even slashier), but you might think it's quite fun. The film was cut down and re-edited from the two-part TV pilot, so it doesn't make much sense, but I'm not sure the original would stand up to scrutiny either.

Smallville - the visual guide? I flicked through that while at was working at Waterstones' last xmas and I remember coming away thinking 'god that's awful!' I can't remember the details but there was something about Lex in it that was just plain WRONG. Like it said about Memoria he was deliberately trying to get back memories of Clark or something, when that wasn't how it happened in the episode at all... although it may not have been Memoria... um... am I right about this in any way or am I talking nonsense? :p

Sorry. I just like SV ranting and seeing that was a catalyst. Like Claire wasn't ;) Good job on the reading.

Oh and wah-hay! I read Last Days of Krypton this year too! :D

Bit melodramtic I thought. Just a couple of world-destroying threats would have sufficed :p Zod was BRILLIANT though.

Yup! I had issues with the way Lara was written. She was so bland! But Zod was awesome!

Fair point about Lara. I was definately only reading for Zod and his girl (who's name I can't spell!) by the end. I was sad he didn't say the movie line though - you know, 'you will bow down before me Jor-El! ...first you, then one day, your heirs!' Still, fun though :D

And possibly the bit that annoyed me in the visual guide was something about Asylum. I'll have to look into again myself to be sure I guess :p

Hee! Uh, I don't remember anything being wrong when I read it. I just had a quick flick and the only thing I could find was them mentioning was in Asylum when his memory gets wiped
