I've found a recipie for the sweet potatoes with marshmallow and I am totally going to try it

Recipie

It's not worded very clearly though. I got confused about what you do after you've baked the potatoes. What do I do with the skin? Because it reads like you turn the skin into the mash but that can't be right

Help?

Yeah, that is weirdly worded, but I wouldn't include the skins in the mash.

They're papery when cooked, I don't think that would work well, if they tasted good.

Yeah, I've checked a few other places and they all say to remove the skins

Well, I shall get experimental very soon

What's a good thing to eat it with?

I've always thrown the skin in the garbage.

Baked ham and green beans are good with sweet potatoes.

Here in the states we fix that for holidays usually, turkey or ham. It's a lot of trouble for every day meals, I think.

Probably any meat would work well with it, but I know I like it with ham a lot.

I still can't get my head around eating meat with marshmallows but ok! Ham is good!

Two votes for ham. Works for me!

I think it is a typo.

I think you just take off the skin and just mash the actual sweet potato.

That's so cool that you're trying out thanksgiving dinner recipes. Have any holiday foods you think an American should try?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I'm trying to talk my parents into sampling it with me when I visit this weekend now. Hehe!

Our holiday food is quite boring. LOL! Roast turkey, potatoes and veg.

It sounds very odd - but then I suppose it's the same as adding any other kind of sweetness to the sweet potatoes?? I can't stand marshmallows so I think that's putting me off the idea.

Will await your tasting with interest! :)

There's something about the autumn that makes me experimental with food

Last year I made butternut squash soup (at your suggestion I believe)

*chuckles* It's good, but it is a special occasion type dish for us.

My extended family uses the marshmellow.

My mom melts butter, adds brown sugar and cinnamon and pours it over the sliced sweet potatoes.

Actually, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee! I don't like the marshmallows on sweet potatoes, although it's a pretty common thing for people to do here.

What I do is just put peeled and cut up cooked sweet potatoes into a pan, cutting them into thick slices. Then I sprinkle brown sugar on top and then added pats of butter.

Bake until the sugar's and butter's all melted....

I'm not big on marshmallows on my sweet potatoes, I prefer butter, but it IS popular. Some people do brown sugar instead. Pumpkin pie though, that is really good. Chilled in the fridge and with whipped cream. I have a friend who makes peanut butter pie as well, I should get that recipe for you, it's SO good.

The problem with pumpkin pie is that pumpkin is really hard to get hold of over here. We only sell them at Halloween and I'm far too lazy to be bothering with getting all the seeds out.

*grins*

It's good... Although, I've seen people mash the sweet potatoes and put brown sugar and butter on top, like you'd put butter and chives on top of mashed russet potatoes.

Ew, no that's way too much work, what you want is canned. Now, this is waaaay too many cans. But it appears that Amazon sells canned pumpkin http://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Market-Foods-Organic-15-Ounce/dp/B000HDI5OS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1224526971&sr=8-1

Sometimes, if you're bored and feeling spendy. I'd send you a can myself, unfortunately I don't have the $$ for shipping right at the moment. If I do, I shall though. You can't live your life without tasting pumpkin pie.

I'm not a sweet potato eater, and I've never seen the skins with the marshmallowy sweet potatoes, but I do know that the skin is very nutrition and of course edible.

If you don't want to make a mash, you can slice the potatoes 1cm thick and serve them that way.

I'd be interested to hear how it goes...

Something funny happened earlier this year, a restaurant chain here in the states, Outback Steakhouse, used to have baked sweet potatoes like baked reguler (or russet) potatoes, and they'd serve it like a baked potato normally would be.

You know, cut down the center and a pat or two of butter put onto it. Only instead of sour cream and chives, they'd also put brown sugar and cinnamon.

Well, now they serve them mashed. It doesn't look particularly appetiizing, the husband unit thought it looked like mashed baby food, but they now put chopped pecans on top in addition to the butter and brown sugar.

He was disgusted the whole dinner, because he said it looked like I was eating baby throw up....

*grins*

I liked it, but I probably won't get that again when eating out with the hubby. The unending comments on eating throw-up was a bit off-putting...
