Do you guys really put marshmallow on your potatoes at Thanksgiving? *boggles*

I really need to get myself over to the US at Thanksgiving so I can try that, and pumpkin pie

I've never put marshmallows on potatoes, but my Stepmom makes this marshmallow salad with mandarin orange slices. It's gross, but my Sis and my StepBro fight over it every year. And pumpkin pie? Also ewwwwww. Ya know you could come here for our Thanksgiving and then work your way South to the Americans...Double the dinners that way!

Well, it's more of a Southern US thing but yeah, people do add marshmallows. And sometimes people add a topping of chopped pecans, brown sugar and butter.

I've never done marshmallows with potatoes... I'm a Northerner, though. :)

We sometimes have weird fluffy stuff, though. (That's what my family calls it, at least: jello mixed with whipped cream and fruit. I have no idea where that stems from, but it's tasty.)

Pumpkin pie is a staple of the US Thanksgiving. As is stuffing.

Those are candied sweet potatoes. I have no use for sweet potatoes in any form, candied or non.

On a related note, my dad says that when he was in the Army, the cook used to make candied sweet potatoes with Chuckles.

See, over here we have sweet potatoes but we treat them as any other kind of potatoe. We don't add sugar or candy or marshmallows. It just sounds so strange to me

OMG! Now I want some sweet potatoes! lol. Oh yes, that's how I've always had them. Baked with butter, brown sugar and oodles of those mini marshmallows. *Happy sigh*
I also like to get sweet potato fries with marshmallow dipping sauce. *giggles* They have them at a year-round drive through here.

Hey, y'all are the ones with meat-flavored potato chips/crisps - I will never get over that :) I'm not a big fan of sweet potatoes myself, but you do see them most often served as a sweet dish, especially in the South (although you can sometimes get sweet potato fries with sour cream or something else that's savoury rather than sweet).

I'm also not a fan of pumpkin pie, although pumpkin cheesecake is amazing. In my family, Thanksgiving is all about the TURKEY and stuffing and mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole with the crunchy stuff on top for people who eat green things, and cranberry sauce (the jelly kind that comes from a can!) and apple pie...damn, Thanksgiving is awesome. I did one in Southampton last year but it wasn't quite the same.
