Question: Any cool news regarding Lois on Smallville?

Paul Ausiello: No, but I have some very interesting news about Chloe, who, as you probably heard, suffers some serious dementia in episode 9. Clark, in turn, seeks Jor-El's help in restoring her memories -- well almost all her memories. You see, Clark decides that his BFF might be better off forgetting a thing or two.

Dude, seriously? Here I was thinking they couldn't destroy Clark's character any further

But, on the other hand, he did make Lois forget in Superman 2 so maybe I shouldn't be so pissed off

It actually does make perfect sense, Clark has to whittle down the people that know about who he is, and his powers. The only other way for this to happen is for Chloe to die (which there had been speculation on).

That said, it doesn't say he takes everything about himself back - which would be very unwise (imagine of Lois turned to Chloe and said, "Do you remember that time you were at X with Clark, and that weird thing happened?" Chloe would have no choice but to backtrack and find out the details, because that's who she is - and then she'd be pissed), so maybe Clark has her forget some details that are bugging her - maybe stuff that leads to the dimentia? Or possibly Jor El gives him the choice - "It's part or nothing, son" type deal.

Like all Superheroes, I think we sometimes forget that they have a frail human side. Superman is no exception, there are choices to be made, and sometimes you end up hurting some, to save others. It's the one thing that makes the comics readable - against insurmountable odds, Superman can't save everyone. The world in the comics sees the bastion of goodness, and preternatural reprieve, but they have no idea of the choices he really makes. They would be far more revulsed if they realised that sometimes, the difference between Batman, and Superman is very small.

His very existence is an example of deception, Superman lies every day, he cheats, he's even been known to wreck the lives of people that have threatened his secret (in an a more or less accidental manner, but he knows the consequences of spoiling a person's reputation).

This really isn't a destruction of Clark's character, it's the tempering of the Man of Steel.

There's this wonderful bit in Red Son, where he's just stopping the satellite, and he's musing back on those times. There's a thousand better ways I could have stopped that satellite, but I chose the most flashy, and impressive (paraphrasing as my dad's currently got the book). He says he could have destroyed it with a punch, melted it, turned it back with his breath - but he was young, and made a choice. As a result, he nearly kills far more people when the daily planet globe is about to fall.

It's moments like this, that I do believe Smallville actually adds something to the legacy of Superman, rather than taking away.

Someday he'll have to answer for the wrong choices he made - how many times has that happened with Lex? Lex shouldn't be alive, but Clark violated his unconscious to keep him alive, and ultimately Lex went on to kill Lionel, Jor El's avatar, and Clark's guardian.

All Superheroes have the moment's they're not proud of, Wonder Woman has killed, Batman has crossed the line so many times, he fears he doesn't know where the line is any more, Spiderman has allowed villains to die, Ironman's an alcoholic, and manifestly power hungry, - things that drag them down to our level, instead of letting the heroes get too powerful, and too far above the readers. If the hero can't fail, can't do wrong, then there wouldn't be villains to test them.

I agree with you - I've been annoyed since I read it. I always hated the 'superkiss' thing in Superman 2 because of what it did to Clark's character - this is even worse. It's not just a couple of weeks of memories but years.

I am hoping that this is all taken out of context and turns out to be something different than what we're thinking ... but knowing SV ... *sighs*

Ok, if Clark really does it, then our SV Clark will never be Superman. He'll be A Superman, but not the version we grew up with and grew to love.

Though it says that decides to do it, but that doesn't mean he'll go through with it. He could have second thoughts or realize that it's wrong. Or maybe it's the only way to heal Chloe's mind so he decides losing her is better than having her be broken.

I dunno, I'm just trying to make Clark the guy we want him to be instead of the moron the SV writers keep making him into.
