I was anxious enough last time I went to the US becase the guys at customs insist on treating everyone like a criminal

This may have just put me off ever going back there again.

I'll just stick to holidays in Europe because, really, I do not want to spend an 8-9 hour flight worrying that I'm going to have my stuff randomly seized.

That is utterly ridiculous. I'm so glad I don't fly, I never have to deal with airport security.

Besides, you watch shows like Dateline, and the screeners always miss the real stuff. Always.

I really think the US government is working to cut itself off from the rest of the world. Why will people want to go there when stuff like this is going on?

Sheesh, as if they weren't acting badly enough already! My mother told me a while ago that she sadly wouldn't be going back to the US after many wonderful holidays there and I thought 'I'll still go. They could still do worse than see my credit card details.' Now they've crossed the line. This is utterly ridiculous, regardless of the limitied probability that it would be your laptop/book/iPod etc.

They are totally shooting themselves in the foot.

Damnit, and I really love the US too.

Yeah, I think pretty soon the US will be totally cut off from the rest of the world

[livejournal.com profile] jacqui_hw was telling me you have to apply in advance for your visa waiver instead of just filling it in on the plane.

Cannot be bothered!

What fools. We were thinking next year we'd go to the US for our holiday but not anymore. That pretty much guarantees the death of tourism in their country. Somebody has gotten the idea that they don't need the rest of us.

Exactly! Fair enough if you have to go there for business or whatever but for those of us who have a choice why would you want to?

::sigh:: I'm hoping that after the elections, things will be a little better starting next year. Either of the two candidates is more reasonable and respectful of the Constitution than the idiot currently in the White House. One of the reasons much of this is making such news is because it's being implemented back door, often violating the guidelines put in place by this administration. (Not that I mean to sit here and talk politics -- sick of the stuff myself and we won't even get to the official nominating conventions until later this month. It's going to be a looooong fall.)

Come to LA at some point -- we've got Disneyland and all sorts of other fun things. :)

Hehe! Disneyland Paris is less likely to have my stuff taken away from me ;)

I heard about this a long time ago. My friend decided not to take her laptop with her on a trip and told me why.

You could come to Canada.

Hee! Yes, I will definitely be heading back to Canada some time. I love Toronto

Unbelievable.

Civil Liberties are getting eaten away here and no one is even noticing because it's happening to foreign nationals.

The thing is about the US Constitution is that the rights established in that document aren't just supposed to protect only citizens, they're supposed to protect everyone who steps onto our shores.

The government used to believe that, then they violate the right of a speedy trial and throw hundreds into Guantanomo Bay for years for no reason other than they might be dangerous men...

Sadly them violating the laws of illegal search and seizure doesn't surprise me given what other rights they routinely violate, but I wonder how it will affect tourism.

It's very sad.

Hopefully we'll buy a clue and vote for the right guy this coming November. Maybe it'll get better after then....

Things like this have got to have an effect on tourism. I'm crossing my fingers that someone with an element of sanity will get voted in this year

I live in a tourism mecca, Pensacola, with some of the prettiest white sand beaches I think I have ever seen.

Swimming in the Gulf is like swimming in bath water, it's so warm.

The resort towns around here are small (Gulf Shores, Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, Destin), but I bet a lot of money is made from Europeans who have far longer summer vacations than Americans, weeks, instead of one. They have to rent lodging, buy food, go to local attractions, take tours, etc...

It'll certainly have a chilling affect on tourism and all the money people bring in.

Geeze. And we just renewed ds's passport, too.

Looks like we're going to have to make a decoy laptop to take with us on vacation if/when we leave the country from now on. 8-\

Can someone over there find me a nice British/European man to marry so I can get the hell out of this god forsaken craptastic country?

Try working in the travel industry - things you tell your clients are not the same one day to the next anymore. Airlines screw everyone with their checked luggage fees, the government is out to prevent people from coming here as well as from us going anywhere, the TSA is the biggest joke ever (I had a bottle of wine in my carry on from Philadelphia back to Minnesota - it did not get confiscated although it should have - 3oz of liquid my butt! :P ).

Ugh - so sick of the BS.
Ok, I'll stop whining now - I have some long term Philippinos who need hotels because the Republican National Convention has booked everything within a 30 mile radius of here and my boys have been booted out of their hotel for the week. *sigh*
I hate Republicans...
