A drunken review
Jul. 27th, 2008 12:01 amI'm a bit the worse for drink on account of
notsowise_sage not knowing the difference between a half and a pint ;) But here is a slightly rambling review of The Dark Knight
SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT!!
For a 12A rated film I sure did spend a lot of time wincing, gasping, flinching and looking away. LOL! Which I think is a testament of the impact of this film given that they didn't really show a great deal in terms of violence. Your mind just fills in the gaps, which is brilliant.
Ok, was I the only one who thought this film was a bit on the long side? I was definitely becoming conscious of time towards the end which is not a good sign in a film.
That said I did enjoy it overall. Heath Ledger, as I'm sure everyone has already said, stole the show but Christian Bale is slowly working his way into my heart. I have always said that so far I've seen actors that play a good Bruce but a poor Batman and vice versa. Bale is definitely getting there as both. I loved the small snippets we got of him as Bruce (falling asleep in a board meeting and acting all clueless after intercepting a truck hit with his car) and his Batman was suitably menacing.
I was a bit surprised when they killed off Rachel but after seeing Harvey Dent use it as motivation for becoming Two-Face I can see why they did it. It's a shame they killed him off so soon though. He was really good.
Heath made me cry, as I expected he would. I was just watching the scene where he's in the interview room and I couldn't help myself. The man was clearly brilliant and it made me cry to think that such a talented actor won't be around for any more films.
I very much doubt The Joker will be back in this franchise.
So, yeah, I liked it a lot. Very much fitting for a Batman story.
...I still liked Iron Man better though

I'm not going to form an angry mob about the Iron Man comic. The Dark Knight was a very political, dark and long film. There's a lot in there to take on board. Iron Man just wants to have fun. It would be like saying "Yeah, Lord of the Rings is okay but I liked Flash Gordon better". Both very different films and both are very good for entirely different reasons.
The Dark Knight was long, mostly because it felt like there were multiple endings. "We finally caught The Joker..but it isn't over yet. We caught him again...still not over....Two-Face is dead...not over yet..." There was a lot to wrap up and I think that once the bulk of the story had been told, it was a case of bringing all these stories to a close, hence why it felt really long and needed such an extensive running time.
Also - they should have blown Rachel up when she was still being played by Katie Holmes. Though I don't think it would have had the same impact.
As for Christian Bale - I called dibs first :p

One of the panelists at Comic Con (might have been Grant Morrison) said he liked the dichotomy of the film - that Harvey Dent was caught in the middle between Batman (order) and The Joker (chaos) and that Two-Face was the reflection of that. Thought it was a cool point.
