I am a firm believer that cats should be allowed to go outside unless it's unsafe for them to do so.

This is why if I ever get a pet it will have to be a dog.

I was just considering a post about how well behaved my parents kitty has been this week when she presented me a bird. Still alive, but I don't think it's going to last long. All its feathers have been stripped bare and it's just lying there.

Problem is whenever I try and go near it it starts flailing and squeaking and it's freaking me out. I have less of a problem disposing of dead animals than ones that are still alive.

Usually when she brings things in I chase her outside with them but this was clearly meant to be a present as she just dropped it on the floor and went straight back outside

Thanks kitty

*points up*

That? And the constant shitting in my flower beds is exactly what puts me off of cats. I hope the bird didn't linger - it breaks my heart to think of it suffering...

It died pretty quickly :(

My kitty stays indoors because we always have birds nesting in our eaves, and we want them to be safe.

Poor little sweetling birdie.

But on the other hand, kitty is a kitty, and they have their own set of instincts too.

Oh, yeah, I don't think she did anything wrong. She clearly wanted to make me happy. She was all pleased with herself and purring.

She could have stuck around though instead of leaving me to sort it out. LOL!

She was trying to teach you to catch your own kills. That's what mama kitties do for their kittens -- bring them nearly dead prey and let them go at it.

I was always lucky to get flies.

And no, I don't let my cats out. I live in a city. The average life of an outdoor cat is 1.5 years, compared to 12 I think for indoor.

So, yeah. Unless I lived way out in the country (and there were no wild cougars or wolves...) Idoors is so much safer.

Hehe! Aww! She's trying to teach me stuff, even though I'm the one who feeds her. LOL

People around here poison cats, if they can trap them by luring them with gooshy foodz. That and the bar across the street are the reasons that Rofl and Yume are inside, even though I think Yume would be happier if she could go out and play. Rofl, however, is terrified of the outdoors. He's absolutely fine to be a housecat.

I think if cats are raised indoors they're generally happy that way :)

My parents live out in the country so it makes sense to let the kitty go outside

In urban areas it's sort of unsafe by definition to have your cats go outside. Cats generally make their own fun (particularly if you have two or more) so they don't need to go outside for either hunting practice or exercise. 8-)

Yeah, if there's more than one they get all their exercise chasing each other

*G* AWWWWWW! She brought you a prezzie! LOL! When we got those as a kid (I grew up in a sub-rural woodland), my dad would quietly and humanely take the victims away to the garage and a bucket of water. *G* But she's clearly enamoured. *Giggle* Unfortunately, letting animals outside in the city is always a problem----we're moving this month but our two cats are gonna stay indoors. They've both been raised that way and it's not fair to upset their apple-carts, either ('specially Naldo--he's 18!)

See, this is why I hate being alone in the house. I'm too squeamish to touch them, too squeamish to kill them.

Definitely not cat mum material

But yes, she does seem to be rather happy with me. I just wish she'd show it in a slightly less icky way. LOL!

Totally. It just depends on where you live.

Lived in Kent, Ohio - not a small town, but not a huge city, either. Cats roam free. I moved to Cleveland, and my cats haven't been outside since.

Oh Dear! Just proving that she loves you, it that adorable way cats have. Pity it was not Smudges "special treat" of stealing someone else's cold meat and bring it back. Never knew where she got it from!

Yes, cold meat I could deal with
