Wow, you guys are taxing my brain today. LOL. [livejournal.com profile] vichan asked for a post on spiritual leanings (I'm assuming my own)

I have to say that at the moment I'm staring into a big well of nothingness but it hasn't always been like that. When I was in my mid-teens I went through a hippy/spiritualist phase where I was really into crystal healing, meditation and tarot cards. When I got to university I got involved in the CU (Christian Union) without really intending to but it became a huge part of my life while I was there, to the point where I led a bible study group in my first year.

In retrospect I think I was confusing an interest in Christianity (my degree is in Theology) with an actual belief in it. I drifted away after my third year when I found that there were a lot of things (mostly the church's attitude to homosexuality) that I had issues with.

These days I don't really have any sort of religious or spiritual beliefs, which I guess is kind of sad, but it's just not something I think about.

Ooooh yeah. I can so relate.

Whatever works for you I think is good. I do think we all have spiritual beliefs, though we might not believe in a set system if that makes any sense?

Yeah, there's probably aspects of a lot of things that I believe in

Ah, yes, that's what I was trying to say! I think I need to get some more rest....

I don't think that's sad at all. I place my faith in people, and the general awesomeness of nature and science, and I'd like to think I'm a pretty happy person. : D

Not sad - a huge chunk of the world is like that. Just something something I'm always curious about because I enjoy long-winded philosophical discussions... and the history of someone's spirituality is an interesting journey. :)

I was raised Unitarian Universalist, and while it is technically a religion, it's also a way of life. (Which applies to most religions, I suppose, but more so to UUism.) 'Deeds not creeds' - it's what you do with your life that's important; not what you believe in. I'm pretty damned open-minded, and I love getting my very very Christian friend in the same room as my very very Jewish friend and starting a conversation about God (or lack of): it definitely makes for an interesting afternoon. :-D
Does that make me twisted? XD

Hee!!! I'd probably be tempted to do the same thing. I love hearing about other peoples beliefs

I don't believe in anything either. I do have a fascination with ritual which leads to my obsession with Jewish fiction, like the books by Chaim Potok. I also really like the way catholicism is portrayed in movies like the Godfather. I used to be VERY conservative evangelical Christian and so seeing religion in movies/tv/books is fascinating to me. But I don't have any spiritual beliefs at all. Sometimes I miss the happy feeling I got singing in church, and the idea of not having any faith does make me sad at times too. But then I just read more astronomy and think about what it would be like to visit other planets and realize that I really do believe in evolution, lol *rambles on and on*
