I'm not overly impressed with gmail so far :(

1. I don't like how it groups all the comments from one LJ post together in one message

2. I don't like how it takes you back to the Inbox after you delete a message instead of taking you to the next message.

I'll give it another day but I think I will be switching back to yahell

See, I RELY on the way Gmail groups everything with the same subject line into single threads - but then I use it for my convention mail, so...I sorta need that.

:oD

Oh, yeah, I'm sure it's really useful for that sort of thing but it's not really what I want

I use gmail, but I have it sent to my Thunderbird inbox, so I can't tell the difference from regular email.

I think to be fair, each email provider has it's strengths, and weaknesses. Generally I consider Gmail to be a weak and annoying system pretending at being innovative and cutting edge (which pretty much sums up the whole company now it's losing it's original staff to corporate time wasters).

This is why my Gmail account is effectively subscribed spam box. I have things like alt.scientology, and other mailing lists (where grouping does make sense), forums I rarely frequent, charity stuff, and anytime something requires me to register but isn't likely to be interesting often, that gets routed through there too. I won't use it for anything else though, as it bugs the hell out of me.

Then I've got my serversurfer@hotmail.com - which has a crap online interface, but it's convenient for all my social networking accounts, dating sites, and other meeting up stuff.

Then there's Yahoo, which I love. I love the online interface (new and old), but there are problems with the spam filters. Happily there isn't through Outlook, and generally the problems are getting less frequent now anyway. Everything else personal goes there, including LiveJournal, anything financial, or that I'd like to see on a daily basis. Plus the wap access is better :)

See, that grouping thing is annoying at first, but it quickly becomes one of the most beautiful e-mail tools EVER. I can't get by without it anymore - put all of one conversation into a row, plus easily keep track of what you've replied to and/or read and what you haven't.

*shrug* Dunno. It's not for everyone.

Hmm....well, I'll give it another day like I said but at the moment I'm just finding it really confusing :(

Nice thing is that the 'thread' collapses once you've already read it, but you can still see all the people who replied to a post. It reminds me of a filing cabinet, which makes me unexplicably happy, which makes me a giant dork. Hello.

I thought gmail was weird at first too, but now I love it! Not only does it keep your stuff threaded, but I can send and recieve as multiple people from the same account, so I don't have to keep logging into different accounts to keep my RL stuff and my fannish stuff separate.

huh. mine doesn't do that...
maybe it's a feature of the newer version or something. you've got a different address than mine. mine's "@gmail.com", not "@googlemail.com".

I love gmail. It took a bit of getting used to, but now I cringe when I have to use my hotmail account for something because it lacks the versatility.

With gmail I can select an e-mail, go to More Actions, and a few clicks later will have set up a filter that tags all similar e-mails for me and archives them if I want. For an organizational freak with 500+ e-mails sitting in her inbox alone, this is a thing of wonder. lol

At first I really wasn't a fan of how it groups things together, but again, I got used to it and can't live without it. Everyone has different preferences, though, right? Hope you manage to settle on something you like.
