Dave has asked me to forward this question on to all my US friends. We call it a drive, the strip of concrete leading up to the garage on your property. What do you call it in the US?
There was a comedian here, Gallagher, that used to talk about language. He said it was odd that in Amercia we, "park in a driveway but drive on the parkway."
Yeah, even within the US there are differences on what we call things so maybe that's it.
For example, on the coasts (in general) you call carbonated beverages llike coke or sprite "soda" but in the interior parts of the country, like in Illinois or Indiana or Colorado, they call it "pop."
When we lived in Colorado, the kids started calling it pop instead of soda and we had to keep correcting them.
I was raised on the east coast and my husband was raised on the west and we both grew up calling it soda. I guess it was just weird to hear them call it pop.
And in the south we call it Coke. So that yes, you will be asked what kind of Coke you want and you'll answer "Sprite" or "Rootbeer" or whatnot. Regional differences are funny!
