hils: (Book geek by me)
[personal profile] hils
Sorry, I forgot something.

I'm planning on re-reading Hamlet before I see David perform it in September and it's been ages since I studied Shakespeare. It's not a play I'm hugely familiar with (I saw the Kenneth Bragnah film and read it once) so I've love to have people to talk about it with me.

I'm thinking of setting up a book filter, to discuss the play at first and then whatever else I'm reading after that. All posts will be behind a cut so if I'm talking about a book you plan to read later you won't be spoiled

Anyone interested?

I'm a very new friend, Hils, so forgive me if this is old hat for you, but have you seen the Canadian miniseries Slings and Arrows? Not only is it wonderful, but the first season focuses on a production of Hamlet, and actually contains some very nice insights into the play.

OOH! No, I'm not familiar with it *checks Amazon*

Thanks!!

Edit: Sadly it only seems to be available in the US

I bought all three series from the US Amazon - they play fine on our multi-region DVD player. The first uses Hamlet a lot, the second and third use other plays, but all are fabulous. And star the beautiful Paul Gross of
Due South
fame.

NTSC is US and I think they only ship from the US. Amazon.co.uk doesn't sell them direct

I studied the play at A Level and have taught it several times at that level - I don't know if that makes me an asset or a hindrance, but I am book-mad as a way of earning my living...

I should probably insert a warning before joining any discussion about Shakespeare, that I've a tendency to go on, and on, and well on about them. I love Shakespeare, and have read many of the plays several times, and if you think I'm bad with over thinking Heroes plots, and significance of the events that happen - I'm even worse with Billy Wobblestick - even though no more will be added, and he didn't often leave the door open to further stories... I'll still explore every facet.

Add me to the filter at your own risk ;)

Hehe!!! I reserve the right to give one sentence answers to your huge-ass comments. Much like I do with Heroes and BSG ;)

Oh crap, I really hope I'm not going to come across as one of those 'I've studied so-and-so, and therefore I'm the Divine Authority on this' people, but my MLitt in Shakespeare Studies covered a few incarnations of Hamlet, and I really should know something of it by now *g*.
So if you don't mind my ramblings, then I'm definitely interested in throwing in my pennyworth with the rest. : )

Excellent! Shakespeare was never my strongest point at school so I'm grateful for people who know what they're talking about. LOL!

I think you've already guessed that I geek a bit about Shakespeare, so I'd love to participate. I've never had the chance to actually do a production of Hamlet, but I for my senior design project in drama, I designed a production of the play set in the 1950's with a Rebel Without a Cause theme -- and with the players as Honeymooners. It was an interesting project to defend to my teachers.

It was an interesting experiment. Ophelia started out as a good girl in poodle skirts, peter pan collars and a pony tail, then transformed into the "bad girl" with a pencil skirt, tight sweaters and bright red lipstick when she went mad. Oh, and she was going to smoke. Got a B+ because my teachers weren't convinced it could actually work (I don't think they could see Ed Norton dripping poison in Ralph Kramden's ear).

Hehe.

[livejournal.com profile] summer_moth and I have started our own two woman book club in the hope of motivating me into finishing all my books and becoming a faster reader.

Should be fun ^^

Although I seem to have misplaced my copy of the first book we're reading. *grumbles*

I found my book immediately after typing that comment!

Your LJ is magical! ^^

Yeah, it's a good idea as it gets me reading and I'm quite interested in seeing whether or not I can take the criticism skills I picked up at University and apply them to written forms of entertainment. So I think I'll get quite a lot out of it. Ant was also squeeing about it as it means I'm going to read Northern Lights :)
