A man claiming to be carrying an explosive device in a rucksack has been shot by police in York.

The 43-year-old man was arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries after he was shot with rubber bullets.

Officers were called to Ouse Bridge in the city centre at about 2100 GMT on Sunday where the man claimed to be carrying the explosives.

North Yorkshire Police said an examination of the bag revealed it did not contain any explosive device.

Police negotiators were called to the scene along with fire and ambulance services.

Residents and those within a 300m radius of the bridge were evacuated while the incident was ongoing.

The city centre from Micklegate to Parliament Street was closed off to traffic and pedestrians.

The Army bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion on the rucksack.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The incident was brought to a safe conclusion at about 2355 GMT when firearm officers discharged a baton round.

"The man was arrested and taken to York District Hospital where he is receiving treatment for minor injuries sustained in the incident."

The baton round is a type of rubber bullet used for non-lethal apprehension of criminals.

Pathetic, so he did want attention. Even for the wrong reasons, so much distruption, and fear. *shakes head* no sure who to feel most sorry for!

I suspect it's more than attention seeking. It wouldn't surprise me if it turns out he's mentally ill

See, here in the US, those bullets? Would have totally been real ones, real explosives in the bag or not. *wonders if that's a good thing or not.*

I think the police are more cautious over here but down in London a guy got shot because they panicked. There was a HUGE kerfuffle about it

Here, stuff like that happens every day. It's just kind of common over here, if someone gets into a stand off with police and starts to get too out of control, a lot of times they use deadly force to stop him.

Hmm. So they might just transfer him straight to Bootham?

Or charge him with wasting police time. Or both. I'm glad it was safely resolved, though.
