Did anyone else know that Andrew Davies has remade Brideshead Revisted? Due for release in September this year

I loved the original with Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews.

Yeah, I knew that and you might find this interesting :
British actor Jeremy Irons has turned down the chance to star in a second adaptation of classic tale Brideshead Revisited. The Oscar-winner was nominated for a BAFTA for his performance as Charles Ryder in the 1981 TV mini-series version of the Evelyn Waugh novel, but has rejected the chance to play Lord Marchmain opposite Paul Bettany in the 2005 big screen adaptation. Marchmain was played by late thespian Sir Laurence Oliver in the original series, which Irons believes he is unable to match. Irons explains, "I declined because for me, it's Olivier's part and I couldn't think of anyone playing it. I suggested that I play Charles Ryder's father instead, but they've written him with a bigger class different than when John Gielgud played the role in the TV series and that would be confusing to the audience because everybody thinks I'm upper class - which of course I'm not."

Yeah, I was also sad to read that when the director changed to Andrew Davies the cast also changed and Paul Bettany isn't in it any more

I love Paul Bettany :(

I'm always a bit wary of remakes when I'm a fan of the original. I hated Keira Knightley's version of P&P

Oh, word! I hated the new P&P. Colin Firth is the only Darcy, forever, as far as I'm concerned (I hope that's the one you meant! LOL!). Most of my friends never saw the old one, and lurve Keira Knightley's version.

I loved Brideshead Revisited. And I worship Jeremy Irons.

Hee! Yes, I meant the Colin Firth version. That will be the only version as far as I'm concerned

Jeremy Irons is definitely worthy of worship

This appears to be a cinema film. How on earth they can cram all that into a couple of hours without making a travesty of it, lord knows.

Some good people in the cast, but the Granada series had some of the best people in the business - Olivier, Gielgud, Claire Bloom - and a host of people who would go on to win Oscars. (And, incidentally, Ethan Rayne!) It had the time and space to do a complicated story properly too.

The only sensible response has to be "Why?"

Yup, that was pretty much my reaction. I am doubtful it is going to be good.

How long was the Granada one? About 4 hours? No way can you cut that down to film length.

I looked it up on imdb. 11 one-hour episodes. 659 minutes actual run-time it says, though that would imply no advert breaks. Minimum of nine hours I'd say, done properly. They'll have to cut so much out it won't make any sort of sense.

9 hours? Wow! I got it on video for Christmas several years ago and I watched the whole thing in one day. I must have been very patient...or just loved it a lot. LOL!

No way is it going to make any sense in a film! I bet it's not as gay as the original either. Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons said they both deliberately played it that way

Dunno - Andrew Davies is not known for shying away from any variety of sexual subtext and tends to make it more, not less, explicit.

Hehe! Well, that might be fun if nothing else ;)
