Today started off so well and then this afternoon just descended into suckage.

Ros woke me up with croissants that she had warmed in the oven and juice. We had a leisurely breakfast and then headed off to Ikea. Got a bit lost on the way but it was ok.

Didn't buy any of the things I was hoping to get, but I did get a sprayer for my plant. Ros is giving me a cutting of something else soon. Gah! The pressure and responsibility! ;)

We wandered round a few more shops to look at Christmas presents for Ros. Her 5 year old nephew is really into pirates so she bought Pop Up Pirate on my recommendation. LOL. I still love that game even now and we played it last time [livejournal.com profile] drbillbongo was here.

Had lunch at Ros's and then came home. [livejournal.com profile] jacqui_hw had already made a start on putting up the decorations and it was all looking good.

We decided to move some furniture to make room for the tree and this is where it went wrong. We moved the computer to the other side of the room and switched it on fine. Then we had to restart it and it switched itself off and wouldn't turn on again. At first I thought it had overheated, but on opening it up I saw my motherboard had died.

Shit!

Luckily, I had a new one which I was saving until after I've done my hardware training course and knew how to install it properly. You see where this is going. Based purely on guesswork I stripped the whole thing down, installed the new motherboard and wired it back up again. Because I really had no idea what I was doing I called Dave (who only lives around the corner from me) and asked if he would mind taking a look before I plugged it back in again. He very kindly popped over and said it looked fine. Go me!

We plugged it in and nothing happened. No power. Nothing. Dave spent an hour looking over everything and poking and prodding and he couldn't work out why it's not working either. Now I have to take it to work on Monday and let our hardware guy poke and prod at it.

All in all I think I spent about 4 hours fiddling with the damn thing. Not fun!

On top of that when it came time to put up our Christmas tree part of the stand was missing so we had to empty the cupboard looking for it. Typically it was in the last box we checked.

So, what should have been a couple of hours putting up decorations turned into several hours of me fiddling with the PC. The decorations aren't done and I'm exhausted.

Only got a few paragraphs left to do on my fic but I just don't have the energy for it now :(

And in other sad news Kelly Brook has pulled out of Strictly Come Dancing due to the death of her father on Monday :(

*HUGS* I'm sorry the computer went crazy.

People pull out of the show if there's a death in the family? Over here they use it to win votes. "I dedicate this dance routine to my ." and they get to move on to the next round.

Apparently she started off wanting to continue but she could concentrate on the training, understandably, so she dropped out.

I don't think I'd be capable of much at all if one of my parents had just died

I don't think I'd be able to, either, but that's how it was this season. A bunch of contestants had sad stories to tell and they kept getting the votes because of it.

I think that the thing with Strictly Come Dancing is that the dancers have to display a LOT of confidence with what they're doing which is impossible to do if you're in that kind of bad space. You just want to be left alone to mourn and I think using it as a publicity stunt to win votes is quite crass and tasteless. Dedicating the first dance after she's grieved and come to terms with the death is one thing, carrying on when she clearly can't do it is something else entirely.

That's what I thought. Playing up the death of a relative was in poor taste and seemed a terrible way to win a contest. How could you be proud of winning for that reason?

I think I'd lose a lot of respect for her if she'd used the death of her father as an excuse to win a stupid dance contest

I'm so sorry! What a day. I know so well that feeling when you try everything you know to fix something and nothing works. It's so frustrating! And you can feel the minutes slipping away, never to be regained. Grrr. I hope your guy at work can figure it out easily and quickly! And I hope this doesn't completely ruin the rest of your weekend. *hugs*

I'm sure I'll feel better once I've had some sleep. Which I am going to do right now *g*

I've spent a lot of time today thinking about and drooling over motherboards today. I'm having to rein in the desire for Quad Core power (partly because my dad hardware man is too nervous to fit it)!

Hehe! I think my new motherboard can take Duo Core and I will definitely be getting a new processor at some point *g*

Oh GEEZ, I'd have been pulling out my hair by then. With any luck it's a doable fix & semi-easy (read: quick); you've already had to pi*ss around with it enough, yeah?

Absolutely! I hope so too. I'm thankful that both Jacqui and I have laptops so it's not the end of the world. We only use the main PC for downloading TV shows, and even then it goes onto an external hard drive. If it can't be fixed the only thing I've lost is all my music. Woe!

I'm sorry you are having so many probs. with your computer. I hope your tech guys decide it's an easy fix.= )

That is so wierd (and sad) about Kelly Brook's father. This past season on the American version, Marie Osmonds father died and Jayne Seymour's Mother died. What is up with this series this year?

It's always going to be in the LAST box you look in... that's when you stop ;)

Still not fixed my main computer - Dell are sending over recovery disks, but hubby thinks the motherboard's gone too.... we're waiting to see. Ain't technology a pain!!

Hehe! Ok, perhaps I phrased that badly. It was in the last box in the cupboard ;)

It sure is! Still, it gave me a crash course in hardware installation. LOL!
