I am very close to buying myself an 80GB ipod. It entirely depends how much money I have at the end of the month. I'd love to have one before I fly to the US so I can watch videos and stuff on the plane.

If not it might make sense to buy one while I'm out there. The price in Wal-Mart is slightly cheaper than they are over here. Only about £30 cheaper but that's still a pretty good saving

We shall see I guess...

Wal-Mart... :P

I had to buy a club for my car there a few weeks ago. I still haven't fessed up to even having entered the store. (Until... now, apparently.)

LOL! Is it not a place to shop in the US?

I don't care if it saves me money on an ipod. LOL!

They're not a particularly honest company. There's countless lawsuits against them for gender discrimination, overtime disputes,. http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/ is a pretty good resource.

They can charge so cheaply because they pay their employees crap, essentially. My family calls them the 'evil empire.'

It's this weird double-standard. Wal-Mart pays it's employees well below the poverty level, but then since everything is so cheap their employees are sometimes forced to shop there, too, since that's the only place they can afford.

Me? I go to Target. Comparable prices, sometimes cheaper, and I don't feel guilty afterwards. :)

(Sorry - some friends and I recently had a REALLY long discussion on Wal-Mart, so I'm still a little bit revved up from it. Me buying a club there was because I was flipping out at 11pm at night.)

That's really interesting. I know very little about the US economy etc (except that I get pretty much twice as many dollars as I have pounds.)

I tend to buy from US online shops a lot because it works out so much cheaper.

To be honest I will probably buy the ipod before I travel so I won't need to go to the den of evil ;)

Oh, I do tons of shopping online, too. It's almost always cheaper to buy from the US, especially when you factor in shipping (for me, at least). I buy from the UK when it's something that you can't buy in the US, but can OWN... US law is funny like that. (No, I won't bring up an example, because people will think I'm a giant alcoholic or something. I'm really not.)

And I know that when I buy from the UK, it feels like I'm spending twice as much as what it's marked. Silly exchange rates. Our dollar value is dropping, though... so you guys might catch up soon. Canada is almost even with us now.

Where are you going in the US, by the way?

I'm going to El Paso to visit [livejournal.com profile] lexalicious70

Yeah, I remember a few years ago I went to Canada and then on to the US from there. I got $2 Canadian for every £1 I had but only about $1.50 US for every £1

These days it's about the same $2 for £1

Good for me, not so good for you.

Over here an 80GB ipod is £145. If I get one from Wal-Mart it's $240 which is about £120

I've taken a stand against Wal-Mart, and it's killing me right now because the Eagles new album is only available there - they have a one year exclusive arrangement. My friends who shop there all the time, and know how much I love the Eagles (although that might change if they're consorting with Wal-Mart, I guess) are all making fun of me. But I have to hold firm. :)

I looove Target. I pretty much go there every week.

The only problem buying something from the US is the guarantee which can vary quite a bit. Have you tried ebuyer? They have some fantastic deals on ipods etc.

Both ebuyer and dabs are more expensive than Amazon.

I do agree that getting one here would be preferable but it's just a case of whether I have the money before I fly out

The battery life isn't terribly long. I've found that I can watch a movie and maybe one television show before my battery is drained. So keep that in mind!

I want the 160gb, but that'll only happen in my dreams :D When are you coming to America and where are you going?

A good point about the battery

I'm coming in January and going to El Paso to visit one of my LJ friends

I have the 80GB iPod, and it's the best purchase I ever made. I love it so much! The funny thing is I don't use it so much when flying. I found you have to turn it up pretty loud to hear over all the airplane noise, and then I'm paranoid I won't hear the flight attendant when she comes around with drinks, plus you have to turn it off during takeoff and landing. Also, video eats the battery like mad. So when I'm actually flying, I read a book. LOL!

It is great to have during layovers in the airport, on public transportation, and in your room before bed while traveling, though. The 80GB one holds a ton. Mine has all my music, a bunch of videos from YouTube, plus episodes of Supernatural, Chuck, Heroes, and The Office. I only have a couple of movies on it so far.

I also bought an extra battery pack, that's good for another 5 hours and is rechargeable. Okay, end of commercial! LOL!

LOL! I didn't go out for lunch or dinner or buy any DVDs for two months to save up for mine. And it still gave me butterflies in my stomach to hand over that much for something that small. But now I'm so glad I did.

However, I don't have a laptop, and a laptop can do everything an iPod can (and so much more, obviously), just in a bigger package.

Hehe! Yeah, I did the same savings thing for my laptop

*pets it*

I adore my iPod. I couldn't get along at school without it. And I can share all my Clexvids with you, YAY!

Well, it's now looking like I won't be able to afford one before I visit :(

But I can definitely put the vids on my laptop *g*
