I have spent the last couple of hours acting as a switchboard and retweeting all the stuff being posted about Misha's panel at the con. It certainly wasn't a chore and a bunch of people thanked me for keeping them updated but it got me to thinking about fandom stuff.
Misha is a smart guy. I think he knew exactly what he was doing when he got set up on Twitter and started posting all his silliness. He's a talented actor (and I'm not saying this because I fangirl him. Impartial critics have said the same thing) but up until SPN he was mostly doing guest slots in TV shows with the odd indie movie here and there. I think he knew that once he got the role of Cas if he could get the fanbase on his side they would stick with him (look at JM as an example. Ten years after Buffy he still has a huge fanbase that watches anything he is in). I'm not saying he doesn't love engaging with the fans because clearly he does but I think there was at least an element of planning behind it.
Look at the first couple of cons he did. He was all srs bsns talking about his poetry and building his house etc and then compare it to how he was at OzCon where he outed J2, crashed their panels and was generally the Misha we see now. Totally different people almost.
And it worked! People love him as much as J2 now. Some people (including me) love him more than J2. The fanbase got Castiel brought back as a regular. I don't think I'd have given Misha much of a second thought beyond 'Oh, I really like Castiel' if I hadn't seen how awesome he is on Twitter and at the cons.
So, yeah, that's why I'm so insanely obsessed with him. I know people tease me about it but I don't think I've ever fangirled an actor who engages the fans as much as Misha does. It's the fact that he's so accessible (and really clever, witty and funny to boot) and encourages the whole fandom thing.
Once SPN is over I likely won't pay much attention to what Jared and Jensen do next unless it's something I would watch anyway. With Misha he has a fan for life.
And now the point of this long winded entry. Photo and vid from the con!
( Yeah, now I use a cut )
