Because I keep spamming other peoples journal with comments here is my stance in black and white. I am disabling comments because I don't want to argue/justify myself. This is just how I feel.
I will not be striking on Friday.
This does not mean I agree with some of the decisions SUP have made. Their communication skills leave a lot to be desired. The fact of the matter is that LJ is a business and I'm sure they're not the only ones out there with crap customer service (NTL anyone?). We have the right, as consumers, to take our business elsewhere if we're not happy with the service. Of course I'd rather not have all my friends up and leave but the option is there.
The problem I haven't isn't with the strike as a form of protest, it's the terms behind that protest. Taken here from the person organising it
1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation.
2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.
3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.
If the strike was merely to show SUP that we're not happy with the way that we, as users, are being treated then I might have been more inclined to get involved. But the fact of the matter is that most companies will make changes to their service without getting the OK from the users first. Getting rid of the basic accounts makes good business sense, and as one user on LJ put it
"But LJ didn't tell us they were dropping the basic account without ads." No they didn't. And my cable company doesn't tell me every time they change packages and/or deals with new users who sign up. Why should they? I'm an existing customer. It doesn't pertain to me. If I already have a basic account it doesn't pertain to me if they change it for the new people signing up as long as they aren't changing it for existing customers. And they aren't.
I'm probably not expressing myself very well and, of course, I totally respect those people who feel strongly enough about this to want to strike.
To me it boils down to the fact that I am happy on LJ. Compared to the alternative blogging sites LJ still comes out top. So I am not striking
