Ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter things have been getting progressively worse. I keep saying I’m going to leave and then not doing so because I’ve been on there for 15 years and I have friends there that I don’t have any other way of staying in contact with. Not to trivialise abusive relationships but it really started to feel that way. Every time Musk implemented another terrible policy I said this time I really will leave but didn’t.

Well, I think I’ve finally done it. On Saturday morning Twitter died, and was down for most of the day. Musk said he was limiting the number of tweets people could read in a day and when you follow nearly 1000 people I hit that limit pretty quickly. For pretty much all of Saturday and some of Sunday I couldn’t get on there at all. It’s fixed now, but that large outage finally pushed me to set myself up with alternatives. Instead of livetweeting my dramas I’m live-blogging on Tumblr and I’m using discord more for chatting to people.

I haven’t quite got to fully deleting the Twitter app (I won’t delete my account just in the same way I haven’t deleted my LJ even though I haven’t used it for years) because there are some DM groups I’m in that I don’t want to leave. But I’ve moved the app into a folder where I won’t be tempted to check it regularly and I’ve closed the tab on my laptop.

Baby steps.

So, yeah, I’m going to try and use this more often alongside tumblr and discord.

I have to say that lack constant stream of terrible news is already doing my brain some good.

"harder to doomscroll" is definitely an upside of not being on Twitter.

and moving the groupchats to Discord seems to be a good move in general.

also I recommend downloading your Twitter data even if you don't delete your account - Elon keeps saying he's going to delete abandoned accounts and has never been quite clear on what constitutes "abandoned".
