Challenge #3
In your own space, Scream Into the Void. Get it all out. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Honestly I'm so tired of *gestures at everything* that I don't really have the mental energy for at length screaming about fandom. So, instead, a bullet point list of things that piss me off
* The notion that's been floating around over the past few years that at some vaguely defined age you become too old for fandom and should focus on your job and your family. It's rooted in both ageism and misogyny (no one ever tells men to give up their hobbies because they're too old) and I hate it.
* Ship/kink shaming - I don't know how we've reached a point where the fictional characters you ship are now a reflection of your personal morality but I hate it. People seem to have forgotten how to think for themselves, and that if a piece of fiction exists in the world it has been personally catered for them and their likes. The back button exists, the block button exists, tag muting exists. Use them. Someone I used to follow on Twitter once genuinely suggested that if you were into a certain ship she was going to call the cops because you belonged in jail. Just don't.
* AO3 does not have an algorithm and certainly does not need one. It's not a social media site. The clue is in the name. It's an archive. You wouldn't go into a library and demand that the librarian give you a computer generated list of books it thinks you should read. Just stop.
* I miss the days when it was taboo to talk to the creators/actors involved in your fandom shows about fandom. Now people get mad if their ship isn't made canon and act like the people involved in the show are creating it just for them. If you don't like what's happening in canon either stop watching or fix it with fic. That's pretty much what fandom is for.
Okay, I'm done.
