3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

Okay, I'm going to try to focus on individual characters rather than pairings because there's a pairings question later in the meme

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Spike for sure. I just find him so interesting to write, especially since when I first started writing Buffy fic he was still very much in the villain role. But even back then I could see how deeply he was capable of loving and the idea of that capability for love warring with his sarcasm, snark and evil nature was such a fun thing to explore. I'm sure my early Buffy fics were very out of character but, hey, that's how you learn, right?

2. Pirates of the Caribbean - Norrington. Easily. You'll probably notice that a lot of the characters I enjoy writing are not the protagonists. I think it comes from what I was saying a couple of days ago about how I used to write stories about what character c was doing while a and b were doing main plot events. It just gives me, as an author, more scope to play and explore. And there's something so interesting about Norrington who could easily have been set up as an antagonist for Will since they are both in love with Elizabeth. Norrington is a good man though. He always tries to do the right thing, but without being one of those 'nice guys' who thinks they deserve things for being a nice guy. He gracefully bows out when he realises Elizabeth in love with Will. He let's Jack escape as a pass for helping them defeat Barbossa. He's a good guy. How can you not love him?

3. Lord of the Rings - As I mentioned yesterday my primary pairing was an RPS one and it's a bit hard to answer this because while technically it's about real people it's not really. It's a fan interpretation about what these people might be like. So I'm not sure I can answer this.

4. Alias - I've only written a couple of drabbles in this fandom and it was years ago so I don't really have a favourite character to write

5. Smallville - Lex, Lex, Lex. God, the things that could have been if this show had been placed in the hands of a halfway decent writing team. I loved the idea of Lex starting off as a decent guy who is slowly moulded and manipulated into villainhood by his father and the circumstances around him. Such potential which was sadly wasted when the writers just suddenly decided 'okay, he's evil now' and that was it. Lex was such an interesting character to write, especially in the first few season where he is clearly trying so hard not to become his father and latches onto Clark as a way to escape that. Such delicious fic potential.

6. LOST - Sawyer. Such an interesting character. I love that on the service he appears to be a selfish asshole and then when you get to know him via the flashbacks you realise that it couldn't be further from the truth and he just projects that image to protect himself. I am such a sucker for men who appear to be hard on the outside but are soft and need hugs on the inside.

7. Sharpe - Didn't really write enough in this fandom to have a favourite character.

8. Hornblower - Didn't really write enough in this fandom to have a favourite character.

9. Merlin - I think it's probably tied between Arthur and Merlin actually. They are both such wonderful characters and I'm pretty sure I wrote fics from both of their PoVs during my time in the fandom. You've got Arthur who at the start is is a bit of an ass (as Merlin so delightfully tells him in the first episode) but who grows to be the man who we know to be the king of legend. Then you've got Merlin who is living in fear for his life the entire time but sticks around because it's the right thing to do and eventually because he cares for Arthur. I'll talk about their relationship more in the pairings question but I love them both.

10. Supernatural - This is an interesting one. Castiel was the character that inspired me to start writing fic but actually it ended up being Dean that was the character I most enjoyed writing. I think it goes back to that tough on the outside and soft on the inside thing I mentioned earlier. He hides so much of himself out of self-preservation but damn that boy is a big old mess on the inside. Exploring that almost felt like I was helping him.

11. Marvel - Clint Barton! The only avenger who is probably more overlooked than Natasha. I love writing Clint. He's so snarky and fun and doesn't deal well with feelings and he gets fucked up more than a little. But he always bounces back and keeps on fighting because he's a goddamned Avenger.

12. Dragon Age - Well, I've only written one fic and started a few WiPs but I'll say Cullen. He's one of the few characters that has appeared in all three games and seeing his journey and how he's developed and grown over the games has been amazing to watch and so interesting to write.

13. The Man From UNCLE - I find Illya way easier to write than Napoleon which is weird because we know a lot more about Napoleon than Illya. Maybe that's why he's easier to write? More scope to come up with your own backstory for him? Actually it's funny because my TV MUNCLE fic was written from Illya's point of view but my movie MUNCLE fic was written from Napoleon's perspective. I find movie Illya incredibly hard to write. So I guess that's my answer?

Hadn't thought about that with Dean...makes sense why he's my fave now... Sort of similar to Spike... I'm enjoying reading your replies to this meme!

I love Spike. I think Willow and Giles were my favourites (not together >_<) It took me a while to get in to Buffy. I think it was the 3rd season. I'd seen the movie so many times and I loved it and the show was nothing like that so... But eventually I was at a friend's place and there was nothing else to do. I still have the whole series of video. Well Ruth bought most of them before we were together. I could never afford them. Videos were so expensive.

Clint is my fav too. Though a lot of my Clint head canon comes from the Fraction/Aja/Hollingsworth comic and a bit from the cartoons rather than MCU.
