So, I have finished watching Blood and Sand and I'm 2 episodes into Gods of the Arena
Does it still count as spoilers when it's a few years old now?
What's not spoilery is something that occurred to me last night. I remember back when Blood and Sand first aired and EVERYONE was telling me to watch it. The reason I gave for not wanting to 'Nah, it sounds too gory and violent for me'
Fast forward to now where my favourite show is about a serial killer who eats people and my second favourite show is this thing
Oh, self, how you have changed.
Anyway, I have a lot of feelings so excuse me while I word vomit
It's funny that now I can't even remember why I didn't like the first few episodes of Blood and Sand. Like, I remember commenting that I found it kind of boring but I suspect if I watched it again now I'd probably like it
It's funny because I was warned that the show would give me all the feels and my response was 'Oh, I'm fine. I don't feel any attachment to any of the characters'. And then by the end of the Bloody and Sand finale I was shouting at my iPad.
I'm still not what I would call emotionally attached to most of them. Except Oenomaus (I always have to look up how to spell his name though). He is my favourite and I know bad shit is going to happen to him before the end and my body is not ready (I'm not spoilered but I read about the RL rebellion and yeah...). I was rooting for him to join up with Spartacus and Crixus in the finale and when he did I cheered. Then I thought Ashur was going to kill him and I started shouting again.
But it was okay. For now. Urgh.
And I really, REALLY hate Ashur. I kind of felt bad for him until he manipulated events to get Barca killed. And, you know, if there had been different reasons for that I'd have probably understood but it was just to get out of paying Barca money rightfully owed. Little shit. So he's on my list of characters I'm waiting to see die now. He's not as high up as Joffrey Lannister (who is?) but he's up there.
I loved how almost Shakespearean the show got towards the end. Plot twists, murder, back-stabbing, visions of dead characters. It was fantastic!
I'm finding the prequel interesting too. As I said I've only watched a couple of episodes so far but I found it so interesting to see that Quintus and Solonius used to be friends. I can't wait to see how things turn sour for them. I'm also fretting about Oenomaus' wife since she wasn't in Blood and Sand. Given what just happened between her and Gannicus I think I can see where this is going and that makes me sad.
I am seriously addicted to this show. Even after working a 12 hour shift I can't go to bed without watching at least one episode. More Gods of the Arena tonight!

It is REMARKABLE television. This tight narrative, this wonderful dialogue, these amazingly intricate action sequences - all brought to life by a cast who clearly care so damn much about telling this important story. Talk about an A game!
I'm kinda jealous of you getting to watch it all for the first time. :)
