BTW this is a great article about why Hannibal is so fantastic. It does contain some spoilers but it's worth a read.
First of all I am SO glad this show got renewed for a second season. I think I'd have hurled my computer out of the window if it had ended there.
I have questions. A lot of questions. And if they'd gone unanswered then ARGH!
You know, it's fascinating that in spite of everything he's done we still haven't actually seen Hannibal kill anyone on screen (with the exception of Tobias which was self-defence). We've seen him menacingly approach people, we saw him choke out Miriam but he didn't kill her at that point because she left a voicemail for Jack after that, right? And we saw him mutilating Dr Sutcliffe post-death. But no actual on-screen killings. And it's a testament to the acting and direction because in a way that kind of makes it more terrifying. The mind can often paint a more vivid picture than the eyes.
Anyway, the finale. No major shocks in this one really as in the preview after last week's episode they showed Will getting arrested. What I did like was them coming back around to the first episode where Hannibal was tampering with the lures in Will's house. Was this always his endgame? I don't think so. I suspect it was more of a failsafe in case Will got too close.
I honestly have no idea how Will is going to get out of this and I can't wait for the next season to find out (NEXT YEAR OMG I HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE YEAR).
I have to say there was one thing that bothered me about this episode and I think I'll have to watch it again to clear it up. I didn't see how Will made the connection that Hannibal was the one who killed Abigail and set him up. Usually we see his thought process in action but I didn't get that this time. Did he suspect Hannibal before he asked him to go to Minnesota with him? Or was it one of this flashes of clarity while they were standing in the kitchen.
What I am most looking forward to, though, it finding out more about Bedelia. The scene where Hannibal brings her dinner (I think we're all of the opinion that dinner was Abigail at this point, yes?) was fascinating to watch. Every subtle look and movement tells me that on some level Bedelia knew what (or who) she was eating. She did it anyway. Was that a self-preservation thing? I NEED TO KNOW MORE.
And I loved the final scene where Hannibal goes to visit Will in jail. It was just perfectly filmed and a beautiful reversal of what we are used to seeing where Hannibal is in jail and Will or Clarice comes to visit him.
Urgh. A whole year. This is more painful than waiting for the next series of Sherlock.
