I have to say I was quite disappointed with this film. I think I was expecting something like Shakespeare in Love and Becoming Jane really wasn't like that. It was much more maudlin for a start.

I don't know how historically accurate it is. I did read a biography of Jane Austen when I was at university but to be honest I can't remember a lot about it. I'm guessing a fair number of liberties were taken with the film.

Anne Hathaway was ok as Jane (but I really don't see why they couldn't find a British actress to play her) but I never felt like I really connected with her. I appreciated the situation she was in but emotionally I couldn't get involved. I really didn't care what happened between her and Lefroy. The whole romance felt a bit forced which I think is due to the script more than anything.

The direction was quite shoddy too and the whole thing felt quite disjointed.

So yeah, not overly impressed.
