A question of pants

hilsSuppose I was to use this sentence in a fic 'He reached into the pocket of his trousers and pulled out his phone'
Does that make it obvious that the author is a Brit? Should I instead say 'He reached into the pocket of his pants and pulled out his cell'?
Because to me pants will always be underwear. LOL
